Armed Attack on Police Headquarters in İzmir (2025)

An armed attack on a police station in İzmir occurred on September 8, 2025, targeting the Salih İşgören Police Station Command in the Balçova district of İzmir. As a result of gunfire fired by a 16-year-old high school student using a pump-action rifle, two police officers were killed, two others were injured, and the attacker was apprehended with injuries.

Course of Events

The attack was carried out in the early morning hours by E.B., a 16-year-old third-year high school student. The suspect opened fire on the police station using a pump-action rifle owned by his father and acquired approximately ten years ago. In the initial volley, police officer Hasan Akın, who was on duty in the guard booth, was killed. During the exchange of fire, Police Chief Inspector Muhsin Aydemir, who resided in the residential unit within the police station building, was also killed.

Police officers Ömer Amilağ and Murat Dağlı were injured, and a civilian also sustained a minor wound to the hand. It was reported that Ömer Amilağ’s condition was critical. The attacker E.B. was apprehended injured by security forces and taken to Alsancak State Hospital for treatment.

Official Statements

Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya, in a statement made via social media, announced the attack and identified the fallen officers as Muhsin Aydemir and Hasan Akın. He wished rapid recovery for the injured officers. Yerlikaya confirmed that the attacker had been apprehended and that an investigation had been launched.

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated that an immediate investigation had been initiated by the İzmir Public Prosecutor’s Office, with two deputy chief prosecutors and six prosecutors assigned to the case. The investigation was described as comprehensive and conducted with meticulous care.

Izmir Governor Süleyman Elban, in a statement at the scene, confirmed that the attacker had no prior criminal record, had never been detained before, and had used his father’s rifle. He also stated that there was no information linking the attack to allegations of domestic violence.

The incident generated widespread public reaction. TBMM Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş and various political officials issued condolences and condemned the attack. Condolences were extended to the families of the fallen officers, and wishes for swift recovery were expressed for the injured.
