Arsiyan Plateau

Arsiyan Yaylası is a natural highland located within the boundaries of Şavşat district in Artvin province. Situated at elevations between approximately 2,600 and 3,500 metres, the highland is known for its numerous natural lakes and floating islands. Due to its proximity to Karagöl-Sahara National Park, it is one of the region’s most important ecological areas. Access to the highland is typically provided by off-road vehicles due to its rugged and rocky terrain.

Natural Features

Arsiyan Yaylası is a highland area distinguished by its glacial lakes. The highland contains numerous lakes of varying sizes, the largest of which is Büyük Göl. The surrounding area features a rich diversity of grasses, flowers and trees. The areas around the lakes exhibit distinct ecosystem characteristics. The highland encompasses a variety of natural elements, including diverse vegetation and water sources.

Cultural Features

In the past, Arsiyan Yaylası was used as a shared seasonal grazing area by nomadic communities from Türkiye and Georgia. Traditional highland pastoral life continues here. Both small and large livestock farming are practiced in the region. Temporary settlements are established during the summer months, and economic activities based on animal husbandry are carried out.

Tourism and Activities

Arsiyan Yaylası is used during the summer months for outdoor activities such as hiking and camping. Due to its natural landscape and biological diversity, it is an important site for nature photography and wildlife observation. The lakes, vegetation and wildlife are particularly favored by photographers.

Arsiyan Yaylası is also visited for safari tours conducted with off-road vehicles. The region is utilized for tourist activities carried out in its natural and rugged terrain. Ecosystem and Biodiversity

Areas around the lakes exhibit marsh-like characteristics due to humid microclimatic conditions, where floating islands and aquatic and semi-aquatic plant species are observed. Büyük Göl and other nearby lakes serve as temporary resting sites for migratory birds. Across the highland, flowering plants, alpine meadows and native tree species are widely distributed.

The presence of endemic plant species enhances the region’s biological diversity and provides habitat for various insects, butterflies and bird species. Small mammals and some predatory species are also observed in the vicinity of the highland.
