At Yaylası

At Yaylası is a highland cluster located in the Black Sea Region of Türkiye, approximately 1150–1250 meters above sea level, north of the city center of Bolu. It is distinguished by its unique ecosystem and traditional transhumance culture.^【1】

This region consists of seven highlands in total and is known for its vegetation, fruit trees, and especially the yilki horses, after which the area is named.

At Yaylası is situated approximately 10 kilometers from the city center of Bolu, in the northern direction of the city. Rather than a single settlement, the area comprises a complex structure of seven distinct highland units, each spaced about 1 to 2 kilometers apart.^【2】 The highland is surrounded by dense forest composed primarily of pine and beech trees and is known for its expansive meadows and pastures. Among the 383 highlands in Bolu, it holds significant potential due to its strategic location and natural resources.

One of the most prominent features of the highland’s vegetation is the dense orchards surrounding it. At Yaylası has gained regional recognition particularly for its cherries. Every year, traditional “Cherry Festival” celebrations are held on the highland to commemorate this agricultural richness.^【3】 During spring and summer, the fertile pastures turn green and serve as a vital grazing area for livestock herds from nearby neighborhoods and villages. Rich water sources and plant diversity enable continuous livestock activities well into autumn.

The highland derives its name from the horses that have roamed and been raised freely in the region since antiquity. Today, At Yaylası has become one of the most important habitats for yilki horses living within the forested areas that cover 65 percent of Bolu.^【4】 Thanks to protective measures implemented by nature conservation and national park teams, the gendarmerie, and the local population, the population of these horses has increased in recent years. Herds of yilki horses grazing on meadows and forest edges, especially alongside newly born foals, form an essential part of the region’s natural silhouette. The area also hosts herds of cattle and water buffalo that spend nights in the wooded zones, presenting an ecosystem where wild life and domestic animal husbandry coexist.

At Yaylası holds significant value for nature tourism due to its proximity to the city center and its scenic landscapes. Primary recreational activities for visitors include hiking, picnicking, landscape photography, and tent camping. Day-trippers who visit the highland specifically to observe the yilki horses contribute significantly to local tourism activity. With its revitalized natural environment in spring, forests turning golden and red in autumn, and a tranquil snowy atmosphere in winter, the highland is suitable for recreational use throughout the year. However, there is no public transportation available to reach the highlands; access is only possible by private vehicle.^【5】
