Bartın University (BARÜ)

Bartın University (BARÜ) is a public university established in 2008. The first faculty in the city was the Bartın Faculty of Forestry, founded on 11.07.1992 under Law No. 3837 as a unit affiliated with Zonguldak Karaelmas University. The Bartın Faculty of Forestry, established at the Ağdacı Campus, began academic instruction in the 1993–1994 academic year. Subsequently, the Bartın Vocational School of Higher Education, the Vocational School of Health Services, and the Vocational School of Physical Education and Sports were incorporated into the university structure.

History

Bartın University became an independent institution in 2008 as part of the nationwide initiative to establish city universities. At its founding, it inherited four academic units from Zonguldak Karaelmas University and also included the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the Institute of Social Sciences, and the Institute of Natural Sciences. Initially, the university commenced academic activities with three faculties, two institutes, two vocational schools, and one school.

In the years following its establishment, the university expanded its academic structure. In 2010, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Literature were established; in 2011, the Faculty of Science; in 2012, the Institute of Educational Sciences and the Faculty of Islamic Sciences; in 2017, the Ulus Vocational School of Higher Education; in 2018, the School of Foreign Languages and the Faculty of Health Sciences; and in 2019, the Faculty of Sports Sciences. By Presidential Decree dated 25 June 2019, the name of the Faculty of Engineering was changed to the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design. By Presidential Decree dated 15 June 2020, the institutes were unified under a single umbrella as the Graduate School of Education. Additionally, by Presidential Decree dated 15 May 2025, the name of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences was restructured as the Faculty of Theology.

Bartın University conducts its educational and research activities primarily at two main campuses: Ağdacı and Kutlubey. The Kutlubey Campus covers an area of 1,171,032.22 square meters. ^【1】 In addition to these main campuses, there are also vocational school campuses in the districts of Ulus and Kurucaşile.

Student Profile

The total number of students at Bartın University is 17,610. ^【2】 Admissions are conducted based on the results of the national centralized higher education entrance examination (Higher Education Institutions Examination – YKS). Students enrolled in undergraduate, associate degree, and graduate programs, as well as international students, receive education at the university.

Bartın University offers a wide range of undergraduate and associate degree programs through its faculties and vocational schools.

Undergraduate Programs

The Faculty of Literature offers programs in Arabic Translation and Interpreting (Arabic), English Translation and Interpreting, Information and Document Management, Contemporary Turkic Dialects and Literatures, Philosophy, Psychology, Art History, Sociology, History, and Turkish Language and Literature.

The Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design includes technical engineering disciplines such as Computer Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, as well as the program in Landscape Architecture.

The Faculty of Education covers specialization areas including English Language Teaching (English), Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Special Education Teaching, as well as programs in Science Education, Primary Mathematics Education, Preschool Education, Class Teaching (including citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), Social Studies, and Turkish Language Teaching.

The Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences provides education in administrative and commercial fields through its departments of Economics, Business Administration, Political Science and Public Administration, International Trade and Logistics, and Management Information Systems.

The Faculty of Science offers science-oriented programs such as Computer Technology and Information Systems, Biotechnology, Mathematics, and Molecular Biology and Genetics. The Faculty of Sports Sciences offers programs in Physical Education and Sports Teaching, Recreation, and Sports Management.

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers programs in Midwifery, Nursing, and Social Work.

The Faculty of Theology includes the programs in Theology and Theology (M.T.O.K.).

Finally, the Bartın Faculty of Forestry stands out with its programs in Forest Industry Engineering and Forestry Engineering.

Associate Degree Programs

The Bartın Vocational School of Higher Education offers numerous technical and social programs, including Computer Programming, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Graphic Design, Business Management, Accounting and Tax Applications. Additionally, at its Kurucaşile campus, it provides maritime and tourism-focused programs such as Maritime and Port Management, Shipbuilding, Marina and Yacht Management, and Tourism and Travel Services.

The Bartın Vocational School of Health Services offers programs aligned with healthcare sector needs, including Child Development, First Aid and Emergency Care, Physiotherapy, and Opticianry, as well as important departments such as Disability Care and Rehabilitation, Home Patient Care, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Services, and Elderly Care.

The Ulus Vocational School of Higher Education provides services through programs in Smart Infrastructure Technology, Office Management and Executive Assistance, Garment Production Technology, Forestry and Forest Products, and Land Registry and Cadastre.

International Activities

The university supports international student and staff mobility. It has exchange agreements with institutions in Europe under the Erasmus+ program. Additionally, the Mevlana Exchange Program and the Farabi Exchange Program, which facilitates exchanges among domestic universities, are actively implemented. ^【3】

Awards and Achievements

Bartın University has received awards in the areas of research and accessibility.

• Times Higher Education (THE) 2025 World University Rankings: Ranked 455th globally and 2nd nationally in the “Research Quality” category. In the overall ranking, it is placed in the 1001–1200 band. ^【4】

• YÖK Outstanding Achievement Awards: At the opening ceremony of the 2024–2025 Academic Year, the project titled “Smart Electronic Fence,” developed under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ersin Alaybeyoğlu from the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design, was awarded the “Contribution to Local Development” in the institutional category. This project aims to achieve sustainability by meeting energy needs through solar power. The university has also gained specialization status in the field of “Smart Logistics and Integrated Regional Applications” under YÖK’s Regional Development-Oriented Mission Differentiation and Specialization Project. ^【5】

• Disability-Free Universities Awards (YÖK): In 2023, the university received a total of 16 flags, placing 4th in Turkey. The total number of “Disability-Free University Flags” awarded to the university has reached 40. The awards were given in the following categories: ^【6】

Accessibility in Socio-Cultural Activities (Blue Flag): Faculty of Theology, Faculty of Health Sciences; Bartın Vocational School of Higher Education, Bartın Vocational School of Health Services, Ulus Vocational School of Higher Education, and the Disability-Free Student Unit Coordination Office.

• TEKNOFEST Achievements: The pencipta.art team, composed of international students, secured third place in the TEKNOFEST 2025 “Social Super Application Creativity” category with their multifunctional “UI/UX Design Super Application.” ^【7】

• Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Samet Çelik from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Literature, received the second prize in the “Social and Human Sciences” category of the TÜBA-TEKNOFEST Doctoral Science Awards. ^【8】

• The BioHydroBattery team, comprising graduate students from the Graduate School of Education, won second place in the Idea Category of the TEKNOFEST 2023 Biotechnology Innovation Competition with their “BioHydroBattery” project, which aims to produce hydrogen from animal waste and generate high energy. ^【9】

• Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Competitions: Two projects by students from the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences received honorable mentions in the “Moving and Accessible Turkey 2053 University-Level R&D Idea Competition” organized by UDHAM. The projects aim to convert kinetic energy from road traffic into electricity and reduce electrical energy consumption through energy generation from mechanical pressure in railway systems. ^【10】

• Academic Performance Awards: The university presents Academic Performance Awards in Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Bronze categories to support academic staff in their scientific publications, project leadership, and patent registration activities. Additionally, certificates of achievement have been presented to academics listed in the “World’s Most Influential Scientists.” ^【11】

Student Life

Students’ participation in social and cultural activities, alongside their academic development, is actively supported. The campuses feature libraries, study halls, and sports facilities. Numerous student clubs operate within the university and organize various events, conferences, and exhibitions. Bartın’s geographical structure also provides opportunities for students to engage in outdoor sports and excursion activities.
