Bartın University (BARÜ) is a public university established in 2008. The first faculty in the city was the Bartın Faculty of Forestry, founded on 11.07.1992 under Law No. 3837 as a unit affiliated with Zonguldak Karaelmas University. The Bartın Faculty of Forestry, established at the Ağdacı Campus, began academic instruction in the 1993–1994 academic year. Subsequently, the Bartın Vocational School of Higher Education, the Vocational School of Health Services, and the Vocational School of Physical Education and Sports were incorporated into the university structure.

Bartın University became an independent institution in 2008 as part of the nationwide initiative to establish city universities. At its founding, it inherited four academic units from Zonguldak Karaelmas University and also included the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering, the Institute of Social Sciences, and the Institute of Natural Sciences.
