Batman University (BATÜ)

Batman University (BATÜ) is a public university established by Law No. 5662 adopted on 28 May 2007. It carries out educational and academic activities in the city of Batman located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The university was built upon the foundation of the Batman Vocational School, established in 1975, and has structured its academic framework in line with regional development goals.

History

The academic origins of Batman University trace back to the Batman Vocational School, established in 1975 under the Ministry of National Education and later integrated into Dicle University. In 2007, by virtue of a new law, the Batman Vocational School, the Vocational School of Health Services, and the Faculty of Technical Education, previously affiliated with Dicle University, were separated and consolidated under a new legal personality to form Batman University. Following its establishment, the institution completed its administrative and academic organization and continued its educational activities as an independent university.

Campuses

The main campus of the university is the Western Raman Campus, located approximately 15 kilometers from the center of Batman city. The rectorate administrative building, central library, laboratories, and numerous faculty buildings are situated within this campus area. In addition to the Central Campus in the city center, the university has campuses in the Beşiri Organized Industrial Zone, Kozluk, Hasankeyf, and Sason districts that host educational units.

According to current data, a total of 15,823 students are receiving education at Batman University.^【1】 Student admissions are conducted based on scores from the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS), organized by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), and students’ preferences.

Departments

Batman University offers undergraduate and associate degree programs through its faculties and vocational schools.

Undergraduate Programs:

Undergraduate programs are organized under various faculties. Programs offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences include English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Art History, Sociology, History, and Turkish Language and Literature.

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture offers programs in Computer Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering (in English).

The Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences offers programs in Economics, Business Administration, Political Science and Public Administration, and International Relations. The Faculty of Health Sciences includes departments of Nursing and Health Administration.

The Faculty of Tourism offers programs in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Tourism Management, and Tourism Guiding. The Faculty of Fine Arts offers a program in Cinema and Television. The Faculty of Sports Sciences offers a program in Sports Management. Additionally, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Islamic Sciences deliver their respective undergraduate programs.

Associate Degree Programs:

Associate degree programs are delivered through vocational schools. The Vocational School of Technical Sciences offers programs in Computer Technology, Electricity, Electronic Communication Technology, Electronic Technology, Traditional Handicrafts, Food Technology, Clothing Production Technology, Interior Design, Construction Technology, Chemical Technology, Jewelry and Jewelry Design, Laboratory and Veterinary Health, Machinery, Automotive Technology, Refinery and Petrochemical Technology, and Drilling Technology.

The Vocational School of Social Sciences offers programs in Banking and Insurance, Office Management and Executive Assistance, Child Development, Public Relations and Promotion, Accounting and Tax Applications, and Private Security and Protection.

The Vocational School of Health Services offers programs in Physiotherapy, First Aid and Emergency Care, Opticianry, Health Institution Management, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Services, Medical Laboratory Techniques, and Elderly Care.

The vocational schools located in districts and organized industrial zones provide programs tailored to regional needs. The Beşiri Organized Industrial Zone Vocational School offers programs in Alternative Energy Sources, Welding Technology, and Mechatronics. The Hasankeyf Vocational School offers programs in Culinary Arts, Pastry Making, and Baking. The Kozluk Vocational School offers programs in Child Development, Accounting and Tax Applications, and Building Inspection. The Sason Vocational School offers programs in Child Development, Heritage Conservation, Organic Farming, and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

International Activities

Batman University implements the Erasmus+ Exchange Program as part of its internationalization strategy. Through this program, student and academic staff exchanges are facilitated with European universities with which agreements have been established. The university aims to enhance its academic standards globally through international projects and collaborations.

Awards and Achievements

Batman University has achieved various accomplishments through academic rankings and project competitions.

Necat Nasıroğlu Project Competition: The fourth edition of the project competition organized in collaboration between Batman University and the Necat Nasıroğlu Education and Culture Foundation was held on 18 February 2025 under the theme “Digital Technologies and Blockchain.” Of the 62 submitted projects, 20 advanced to the final round. The award ceremony was hosted by a robot named “Ada.” The first prize was won by the “Block-Çek” project, the second prize by the “Blockchain-Based and IoT-Supported Secure System for Tracking Students Assigned to Services” project, and the third prize by the “Development of a Sustainable Blockchain-Based and AI-Supported Integrated Digital Platform for Monitoring Carbon Emissions and Renewable Energy Trading” project.^【2】

Rankings and Academic Awards: The university has been included in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 and 2024 “Sustainable Development Goals” (Impact Rankings). Batman University ranked in the 601–800 band globally in the categories of “Zero Hunger” (SDG 2) and “Sustainable Cities and Communities” (SDG 11). Additionally, the “SPE Batman University Student Chapter” within the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering was awarded the “Student Chapter Excellence Award” by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).^【3】

Student Life

Batman University campuses provide facilities to meet students’ social, cultural, and sporting needs. Students organize various activities through student clubs formed according to their interests. Accommodation needs are met by dormitories operated by the Credit and Hostels Institution (KYK) located around the campuses and in the city center.
