Bingöl Şeyh Ahmet Türbesi

Sheikh Ahmed Turbe is a historical burial structure from the Ottoman period located in the village of Göltepesi, within the provincial center of Bingöl.^【1】

The structure is situated on a dominant hilltop in the northern section of Göltepesi village, 18 km from the center,^【2】 within a cemetery area.^【3】

No inscription indicating the construction date has been found on the structure, so its exact year of construction remains unknown;^【4】 however, its architectural features lead to its classification as an Ottoman-era work. The structure was officially registered and placed under protection in 2013.^【5】

In January 2015, following acts of vandalism by unidentified individuals, Bingöl Municipality carried out an extensive restoration project. As part of this effort, the tomb’s stones were reorganized and the structure was restored to its original form.^【6】

The turbe is a square-plan structure. Its roof is covered both internally and externally by an octagonal dome. An octagonal drum connects the dome to the main body. The arches supporting the dome rest on rectangular columns at the center of the walls and on circular columns at the corners.^【7】

The columns on the exterior façade feature base and capital details. The façade design is completed by a cornice that encircles the entire building at the level of the column capitals. Access to the interior space is provided through a door opening on the eastern façade.^【8】

Inside the space, squinches are used at the corners to transition to the dome. Lighting is achieved through oval-shaped windows set within circular arches.^【9】

Inside the turbe, the tomb of Sheikh Ahmed is constructed in a sarcophagus shape using cut stone. Steles are present at the head and foot ends of the tomb. Although no construction inscription exists on the structure as a whole, an inscription is found on the outer face of the foot stele of the sarcophagus tomb.^【10】
