Bülent Akyürek's Appearance on the Literature World Program (TRT2)
Bülent Akyürek was born in Elazığ in 1969 and moved to Ankara in 1985. He left high school before completing his studies. During his youth and adulthood, he worked in various jobs including waiter, restaurant owner, publisher, and factory worker. The experiences gained during these years provided the social and personal observations that formed the background of his literary production.
Akyürek’s literary journey began at the age of seventeen with his first novels. He maintained his literary output for nearly forty years. During this period, he did not only write books but also participated in the founding and publication of various literary journals. His works appeared in journals such as Ustura, A’raf, Fesat, Sanal Ördek, Aksak Kurbağa, and Son Duvar.【1】
His 1997 novel İtin Biri was adapted for the theater the same year and staged by the Nihayet Tiyatro group.【2】 After the age of thirty-five, which is regarded as a turning point in his life, notable shifts occurred in his intellectual orientation; these changes directly influenced the thematic and narrative structure of his works.【3】
Bülent Akyürek’s literary production cannot be confined to a single genre or narrative pattern. In his novels, the individual’s conflict with society and inner self, marginalization, alienation, and existential questions are central themes. In his narrative and essay works, everyday life, human relationships, silence, speech, and the habits of modern life are explored.
In particular, during the later stages of his life, Akyürek wrote texts critically examining modern lifestyles, dependence on technology, and the individual development paradigms imposed by capitalist systems; a distinct critical stance toward these elements became evident in these writings.
Bülent Akyürek’s works are generally classified into three categories: novels, narrative/essay books, and personal development writings.
Different narrative techniques were employed in these novels; in some works, aphorisms are interwoven with poetic language. In particular, Yağmur Getiren Fırtına features a narrative structure that portrays the pre-1980 period through the eyes of a child.【4】 Cinnetim Cennetimdir presents a fictional world associated with underground literature examples.【5】
In these works, everyday life practices, human behaviors, and social relationships are examined through narrative and essay forms.
In this book, the theme of personal development is approached through Islamic sources, adopting a perspective distinct from mainstream personal development discourses.
In the final years of his literary career, Bülent Akyürek lived for an extended period without publishing books; during this time, health issues and estrangement from the literary world had a significant impact. After an absence of approximately fourteen years, he published the novel Satılık Adam. This work attracted attention as the product of an extended writing process.
Akyürek, who had been undergoing cancer treatment for some time, passed away on 8 February 2026.
