Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Duran, born in 1970 in Adapazarı, Türkiye, is an academic and bureaucrat known for his scholarly and intellectual contributions in the field of political science in Türkiye. He is recognized for his research on Islamic thought, Turkish foreign policy, and the history of political ideas. In addition to his academic career, he has held leadership positions in think tanks and public service roles.

Duran was born on 1 January 1970 in the district of Adapazarı, Sakarya. He completed his undergraduate studies at Boğaziçi University, Department of Political Science and International Relations in 1993. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in Political Science and Public Administration at Bilkent University. His doctoral research focused on analyses centered on the transformation of Islamism and the history of political thought.

Duran began his academic career in 1993 as a research assistant. After completing his doctorate in 2001, he served as a faculty member at various universities. Between 2009 and 2015, he was head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Istanbul Şehir University. From 2015 to 2017, he worked as a professor at Ankara University of Social Sciences. He also served as a visiting academic at George Mason University for one year.

Since 2018, he has been a professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at İbn Haldun University. His academic work primarily focuses on Islamist political thought, Turkish politics, foreign policy analysis, and Middle Eastern politics.

Duran has published numerous articles in Turkish and English on Turkish foreign policy, Turkish political life, Europe, transformation and politics in the Middle East, democracy, civil society, Turkish intellectual history, and Islamism. His book titled The History of the 19th Parliament (in three volumes) has been published. His articles have appeared in journals including Middle Eastern Studies, Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies, Insight Turkey, The Muslim World, Euro Agenda, Perceptions, Orient, Liberal Düşünce, Muhafazakar Düşünce, Demokrasi Platformu, Hece, and Bilgi ve Sivil Toplum. He is among the editors of the Turkish Foreign Policy Annual (2009–2023).

In 2014, Burhanettin Duran was appointed General Coordinator of the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA). In this role, he guided research initiatives that influenced both academic and policy-making circles. He contributed as both author and editor to reports, analyses, and articles published under SETA’s auspices, producing strategic assessments for the public on numerous aspects of Türkiye’s foreign policy.

Duran has contributed as a commentator on the TRT 1 program Enine Boyuna. In October 2018, he was appointed as a member of the Presidential Council on Security and Foreign Policy. On 20 May 2024, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye. In this capacity, he has contributed to the implementation of Türkiye’s foreign policy objectives and translated his academic expertise into bureaucratic practice.

According to the appointment decision published in the Official Gazette on 10 July 2025 by the Presidency of Türkiye, he has been appointed to the Directorate of Communications.
