Origin

The word entered Turkish from Arabic جرِيدة (cerīde), which in Arabic means “written leaf” or “record.” In Ottoman Turkish, this term was used for both printed publications and official record books. Over time, it acquired specialized meanings in various fields.

Areas of Use

• History of the press: It was used in early publishing terminology as the equivalent of “newspaper.”
• Ottoman bureaucracy: It was employed in the naming of official records and registers.
• Military history: It became one of the terms denoting cavalry units.
• Finance and land administration: It was used as a technical term in land surveying and tax records.
