The term “chemtrail” is an abbreviation of “chemical trail.” Conspiracy theorists claim that these streaks consist not only of water vapor but also of chemicals that could harm human health and the environment. However, scientists explain that these streaks form when hot water vapor from aircraft engines condenses and freezes into ice crystals in cold, humid atmospheric conditions.

In a 2016 study, 77 atmospheric scientists and geochemists were asked about chemtrail claims; 76 stated they found no evidence of any condition harmful to nature or human health. Furthermore, the concentrations of elements such as barium, strontium, and aluminum in soil and water samples presented by chemtrail proponents were found to be within levels that could originate from natural sources or industrial activity.

A study conducted at the University of Cambridge showed that posts on social media about geoengineering are frequently linked to chemtrail conspiracy theories. This association makes it more difficult for the public to distinguish between scientific facts and conspiracy claims.

In the U.S. state of Tennessee, a bill based on the chemtrail conspiracy theory was proposed and passed by the state senate. The bill aims to prohibit the deliberate release of chemicals into the atmosphere. However, scientists emphasize that no such practice exists and that the bill lacks any scientific foundation.
