Arabic The term is derived from the Arabic root š-w-r (ش و ر), which carries the meanings of "consultation" and "seeking opinion". It originates from the word istişāra(t) (اِستشارة). This word is the masdar (verbal noun) formed in the istif‘āl pattern (tenth verb form) from the verb šāra (سَارَ), meaning "to show" or "to indicate". The istif‘āl pattern adds the sense of "seeking or desiring something to occur". Thus, etymologically, istishāra represents the process of "seeking guidance toward the correct path" or "desiring the indication of what is appropriate"; that is, the will of a mind to seek the guidance of other minds in order to transcend its own limitations.
