Dedeoğlu Mansion

Dedeoğlu Konağı is a historic mansion located in the Kurtuluş Neighborhood of the Dulkadiroğlu District in Kahramanmaraş Province, Türkiye. Recognized as one of the examples of Ottoman-era civil architecture, the three-story mansion reflects the residential architectural concepts and social lifestyles of its time. The mansion constitutes an important example of the region’s historical heritage, both in terms of its structural features and its cultural function. Today, Dedeoğlu Konağı serves as a Cultural Center and is used for various cultural events, exhibitions, and educational programs.

History

Although the exact construction date of Dedeoğlu Konağı is not recorded in official documents, its architectural features and construction techniques suggest it was built in the early 1900s. The original owners of the building were the Dedeoğlu family, and the mansion consists of three separate structures belonging to the family.

Over time, the building underwent various maintenance and repair works. It was restored in accordance with its original form during 2011–2012, a project documented by Remi Hesapsa. This restoration preserved the mansion’s architectural uniqueness while making it suitable for cultural activities.

Architectural Features

Building Type and Materials

Dedeoğlu Konağı is a three-story structure built using rough-hewn stone on the lower levels and wood with bagdadi technique on the upper levels. Its design embodies typical characteristics of Ottoman civil residential architecture and is characterized by an external sofa, kiosk, and eyvan layout that organizes the relationship between interior and exterior spaces.

Facade and Details

The street-facing facades of the mansion feature cumbas, wooden balconies, and decorative panels that draw attention. These elements reflect the lifestyle of the period both aesthetically and functionally. The use of stone and wood in the facade design exhibits a structural character typical of traditional residential architecture.

Restoration and Use

The 2011–2012 restoration works were carried out to preserve the mansion’s architectural fabric and original material usage. Following the restoration, the building began to be used as the Dedeoğlu Konağı Cultural Center for cultural events, exhibitions, and educational programs.
