Denizli High School

Denizli High School, is a secondary education institution located at 2580 Kuşpınar Street in the Pamukkale district of Denizli, Türkiye, with a historical background dating back to the last quarter of the 19th century. The institution holds a prominent place among the region’s key educational centers due to its physical structure and its role in educational history.^【1】

The school began its educational activities in 1874 at the site of Çatalçeşme Park as a three-class Rüştiye School. The number of classes increased to four in 1892 and to five in 1894, when it adopted the name Liva İdadisi. After suffering heavy damage in the 1899 earthquake, the institution was temporarily relocated to a building in Değirmenönü Mahallesi in 1903.

In 1904, the school was renamed Sanat İdadisi. In 1922, it was granted the status of Sultanî Mektebi. At the end of the 1923–1924 academic year, it was restructured as a middle school, and in 1932 it attained high school status. It operated under the name İnönü High School from 1945 until 1950, when it adopted its current name, Denizli High School. Since 2008, the institution has continued its educational activities as an Anatolian High School.^【2】

Denizli High School is a public state school under the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Türkiye. The institution conducts its activities within the framework of the National Education Basic Law No. 1739 and the Public Financial Management and Control Law No. 5018. Its core mission is to cultivate individuals aligned with the model of the “good citizen,” grounded in contemporary, universal, and national values, through scientific methods and stakeholder collaboration. Its vision is articulated as “If you are here, you are ready for life.” In accordance with its 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, the institution has embraced a democratic school culture, active learning, and a student-centered educational approach.^【3】

The school operates a dual-shift system: morning classes run from 07:30 to 13:00, and afternoon classes from 13:10 to 18:40.^【4】 Foreign language instruction includes English and German. The institution was included in the Curriculum Laboratory School (MLO) program during the 1993–1994 academic year and transitioned to the Foreign Language Emphasis High School model in the 1996–1997 period.^【5】

Student admissions at the institution are currently conducted without an entrance examination. According to 2025 statistics, 35 percent of graduating students were placed in higher education institutions through the national university entrance system.^【6】

The campus comprises the “Historic Building” (Old Building), the “New Building,” and the “Dormitory Building.” The foundation of the Historic Building was laid in 1915, but construction was halted due to material constraints and completed in 1926–1927 with funding allocated by Governor Mithat Kalabalık.

The building was officially registered as a “Protected Historical Monument” in 1985 and underwent comprehensive restoration between 1990 and 1993. The classroom where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk observed a lesson during his visit on 4 February 1931 was opened as the “Republic Museum” on 29 October 1993. A dormitory building with a capacity of 220 students was constructed in 1962–1963, and the “New Building” was put into service in 1967. The campus is heated using a natural gas system.^【7】

The school administration consists of a principal and one vice principal. Historical figures such as Sacit Öncel (1931–1932) have served as principal. The current principal is Ahmet Bozdeveci. The institution also employs specialist teachers and guidance service personnel.^【8】

In the 1926–1927 fiscal year, following the completion of the Historic Building, the institution became the first in Türkiye to adopt a “muhtelit” (mixed-gender) education system, enrolling both male and female students together. Guidance activities for students include education on cyberbullying and personal development.^【9】

The school has achieved first-place finishes in volleyball, swimming, wrist wrestling, and wrestling; first place in step aerobics; second place in high jump; and third place in football. Culturally, the school published the annual “Amaç” in 1938, the magazine “Yankı” in 1967, and the magazine “Koca Mektep” in 1997. Additionally, “Denizli High School Radio” began broadcasting on shortwave in 1970, and the “ALO LİSE” telephone service was launched between 1997 and 1998.^【10】

Local projects implemented at the institution include “Sister School,” “Monitoring and Enhancing Success,” “School Promotion,” “Hold My Hand,” “Introducing Those Who Serve Our Country,” and “Reading Time.” In the scientific domain, the school participates in TÜBİTAK science fairs and project competitions, having secured third place in the TÜBİTAK Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition. At the international level, the school has implemented the “ERASMUS+” project under the European Union education programs.^【11】
