Durağan Çemberi

Durağan Çemberi is a traditional woven textile product unique to the Durağan district of Sinop. It has been registered as a geographical indication under Law No. 6769 on Industrial Property and has been protected since 3 December 2018. The registration process was completed on 3 August 2021 on behalf of the Durağan Municipality.

Product Description and Characteristics

Durağan Çemberi is a textile product belonging to the woven goods category. These circular pieces are commonly used as head coverings and stand out for their aesthetic and functional qualities. The weaving process is carried out on a fabric measuring 100–110 cm in width and approximately 120 cm in length. The edges of the Çemberi are decorated with patterns made from red and white threads, and these edge weaves constitute a distinctive feature of the product. The threads used in production possess qualities such as luster and flexibility, with wool and cotton threads being the preferred materials. The patterns are created through a combination of lustrous threads alongside wool and cotton threads.

Production Process

The production of Durağan Çemberi is based on traditional methods and requires considerable skill. The weaving is typically performed on a rectangular prism-shaped loom made of iron. This loom measures approximately 60 cm in height and has dimensions of 5x200 cm and 1x100 cm, occupying a surface area of 3 m². During weaving, finger needles are used, and in addition to lustrous threads, wool and cotton threads are incorporated to create the designs. The edges of the Çemberi are completed using the “bez ayağı” technique, in which two wicks are inserted between three colored threads and two white threads. A thick material at least 150 cm wide is placed beneath and in front of the loom to ensure the smooth progression of the weaving process.

Geographical Connection

All stages of Durağan Çemberi production are carried out within the boundaries of the Durağan district. The product’s geographical link stems from both the uniqueness of its production process and the cultural fabric of the region. Therefore, to preserve the quality and distinctiveness of the product, all production, processing, and related activities are conducted exclusively in Durağan.

Monitoring Process

To ensure the maintenance of quality standards for Durağan Çemberi, inspections are conducted under the coordination of the Durağan Municipality. The inspection team consists of at least three experts from the Durağan Municipality, the Durağan District National Education Directorate, and the Durağan Public Education Center Directorate. In addition to four scheduled inspections per year, additional inspections may be carried out as needed.

Cultural and Historical Significance

As a traditional craft passed down from generation to generation, Durağan Çemberi reflects the cultural identity of Durağan. Its production is a process requiring skill and patience, ensuring the continuity of the region’s weaving tradition. The registration as a geographical indication aims to safeguard the product’s uniqueness and its value specific to Durağan.
