Düzce University (DÜ)

Düzce University (DÜ) is a public university established in Düzce by Law No. 5467, published in the Official Gazette No. 26111 on 17 March 2006. The university conducts educational, instructional and research activities across multiple campuses within the province of Düzce.

History

The academic foundations of the university were laid in 1976 with the establishment of the Düzce Vocational School under Istanbul Technical University. In 1992, with the founding of Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University, the Düzce Vocational School, Akçakoca Tourism Management and Hotel Management Vocational School, Akçakoca Vocational School, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Technical Education, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Sciences were integrated into this new university and continued their development. Following the 1999 Düzce Earthquake, which caused damage to buildings, the Faculties of Technical Education and Forestry temporarily operated from public buildings. Relocation processes completed in 2001 and 2003 resulted in the transfer of these faculties to the Konuralp Campus.

On 17 March 2006, with the enactment of the law, Düzce University was officially established by bringing together academic units separated from Abant İzzet Baysal University alongside newly created faculties and institutes: the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Social Sciences, the Institute of Natural Sciences and the Institute of Health Sciences, all under a single umbrella. Operating under the slogan “University That Creates Value,” the institution was selected as one of the first five universities in Türkiye under the “Regional Development-Oriented Mission Differentiation and Specialization Program,” implemented in cooperation with the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Ministry of Development.

Campuses

Düzce University carries out its educational, research and application activities across nine distinct locations within the boundaries of Düzce province: one central campus and eight separate campuses. The Konuralp (Central) Campus, serving as the administrative and academic center, houses the Faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Education, Theology, Business, Forestry, Health Sciences, Sports Sciences, Agriculture and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate Education Institute. Additionally, the Hakime Erciyas School of Foreign Languages, the School of Forestry, the School of Health Services and the university hospital are also located on this main campus.

Outside the central campus, faculties and vocational schools are distributed across various regions. The Üskübü Campus hosts the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. The Akçakoca Campus includes the Akçakoca Bey Faculty of Political Sciences, the Faculty of Tourism and the Akçakoca Vocational School. The Düzce Campus in the provincial center, the Gümüşova Campus and the Kaynaşlı Campus host the Gümüşova Vocational School and the Kaynaşlı Vocational School respectively.

Student Profile

A total of 30,003 students at Düzce University are enrolled in associate, undergraduate and graduate programs.^【1】 Students gain admission to the university based on results from the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) organized by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), as well as through international student examinations.

Departments

Düzce University offers a wide range of undergraduate and associate degree programs across its faculties and vocational schools.

Undergraduate Programs

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences includes departments of Abaza Language and Literature, Archaeology, Biology, Circassian Language and Literature, Circassian Language and Culture, Philosophy, Georgian Language and Literature, Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, Sociology, History and Turkish Language and Literature. The Faculty of Engineering offers education in Computer Engineering (Turkish and English), Biomedical Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering. The Faculty of Forestry houses the departments of Wood Industry Engineering, Forest Industry Engineering, Forestry Engineering and Landscape Architecture. The Faculty of Agriculture includes departments of Plant Protection, Biosystems Engineering, Agricultural Biotechnology and Field Crops.

The Faculty of Education offers programs in Science Education, Primary Mathematics Education, English Language Teaching, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Guidance and Psychological Counseling, and Classroom and Turkish Language Teaching. The Faculty of Business comprises departments of Business Administration, Health Management, Insurance and Social Security, International Trade and Finance, and Management Information Systems. The Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture includes departments of Visual Communication Design, Architecture, Radio Television and Cinema, Theater Criticism and Dramaturgy. The Akçakoca Bey Faculty of Political Sciences offers departments of Economics, Political Science and Public Administration (Turkish and English), and International Relations.

In the health field, the Faculty of Medicine (Medicine), Faculty of Pharmacy (Pharmacy) and Faculty of Health Sciences (Nursing, Social Work) provide education. In tourism, the Faculty of Tourism and its affiliated vocational school offer programs in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts and Tourism Management. Additionally, the Faculty of Theology offers a Theology program, and the Faculty of Sports Sciences offers a Sports Management program.

Associate Degree Programs

Vocational schools offer various technical and social programs. Technical departments include Computer Programming, Electricity, Electronics Technology, Construction Technology, Machinery, Mechatronics, Automotive Technology, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design and Traditional Handicrafts. Health and service sector programs include First Aid and Emergency Care, Elderly Care, Child Development, Pharmacy Services, Culinary Arts, Tourism and Hotel Management, Call Center Services, Social Security, and Population and Citizenship.

In addition, programs contributing to regional specialization include Beekeeping, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Forestry and Forest Products, and Hazelnut Expertise. Education is also provided in areas such as Emergency and Disaster Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Protection and Control, Alternative Energy Resources Technology, Logistics, Foreign Trade, Accounting and Tax Applications, Business Management, Cartography and Cadastre, E-Commerce and Marketing, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

International Activities

In line with its internationalization strategy, the university supports student and staff mobility. Exchange programs such as Erasmus+, Mevlana and Farabi are actively implemented, and academic collaborations are maintained with universities around the world.

Awards and Achievements

Düzce University has been ranked and recognized in various national and international platforms for its projects and academic work.

Times Higher Education (THE) 2025 Subject Rankings: The university entered the “World University Rankings by Subject 2025” in the fields of Medicine, Engineering and Life Sciences. Among all Turkish universities, it ranks 23rd, and among public universities, it ranks 13th. Notably, in Engineering, it placed within the global 501–600 band and achieved first place among all public universities established in Türkiye after 2000. Additionally, in Life Sciences, it entered the rankings for the first time, securing 26th place among Turkish universities.^【2】

TÜBİTAK 2209-A Project Support: Under the 2023 First Call of the “TÜBİTAK 2209-A University Student Research Projects Support Program,” a total of 21 projects prepared by Düzce University students were granted funding. The distribution of funded projects is as follows: Faculty of Engineering (7), Faculty of Pharmacy (4), Faculty of Education (3), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (3), Dr. Engin Pak Cumayeri Vocational School (2), Faculty of Business (1) and Faculty of Agriculture (1).^【3】

TEKNOFEST 2025 First Places: At the 2025 Aviation, Space and Technology Festival (TEKNOFEST), university teams won first place in two separate categories. The “HAREZMİ DGM Team,” composed of students from the Faculty of Engineering, won first place in the TÜRKSAT Model Satellite Competition (Category-1). Additionally, the “MEKATEK Community” students secured first place in the Swarm UAV Competition, bringing two consecutive championships to the university.^【4】

Student Life

In addition to academic development, the university provides opportunities to meet students’ social, cultural and sporting needs. Libraries, sports facilities, student organizations and social spaces located across campuses form essential components of campus life.
