René Guénon’s work The East and the West (Orient et Occident), published in 1924, is a philosophical and cultural study that examines the fundamental differences between West civilization and East tradition.

In this work, Guénon identifies the characteristics that distinguish the East from the West, critiques the West’s deficiencies and wrong aspects, and argues that a rapprochement between East and West is not only possible but necessary. The first section of the book is devoted to exposing the fears, anxieties, and illusions experienced by the West. Author, progress, science, science, life and like—values regarded as essential by Western societies—are critically examined, revealing their illusory fears and real dangers. In the second section, the potential for rapprochement between East and West is explored from multiple divergent and similar perspectives.

According to Guénon, the West, having severed its metaphysical roots with the Enlightenment, has focused exclusively on scientific and technological progress while neglecting its spiritual dimension. The East, by contrast, has preserved its traditional wisdom and metaphysical understanding, offering a more strong foundation for humanity’s search for truth. In the work, the Western conception of progress is critiqued while the superiority of the East’s metaphysically grounded information system is defended.

Guénon argues that a synthesis between East and West must be established, and he asserts that the West can benefit from the spiritual teachings of the East. However, he emphasizes that this must not take the form of superficial orientalism but rather a genuine orientation toward the East’s traditional wisdom.

As one of the founding figures of the traditionalist school, René Guénon’s work is regarded as one of the foundational texts reflecting the traditionalist perspective.
