Ekrem Bora (7 March 1932, Ankara – 1 April 2012, İstanbul) was a film and television actor. Over a career spanning 54 years, he appeared in over 200 productions and became one of the leading actors of Turkish cinema. Throughout his career, he portrayed youthful roles as well as authoritarian, intense, and dramatic characters, and was awarded the Altın Portakal Award for Best Actor twice, in 1960 and 1990.

Life

Ekrem Bora, whose real name was Ekrem Şerif Aircraft, was born on 7 March 1932 in Ankara. His father, Sergeant Mazhar Uçak, was among Türkiye’s first military pilots, and his mother was Ayşe Nuriye Uçak. He began his education at Suadiye 38th Primary School. In the 1940s, he developed an interest in cinema. Although his family directed him toward a bookbinding course, he completed his training and became a certified bookbinder.

In 1953, he participated in the “Cinema Competition” organized by the magazine Yıldız and was selected first. Following this competition, he continued his cinema career under the surname “Bora.” He completed his military service in Erzincan and Diyarbakır.

Personal Life

Ekrem Bora married Pamukçu in 1966. They had two daughters, Yasemin and Lale. He also had another daughter, Sevil, from his first marriage. He preferred a simple, private life away from the media.

Career

Ekrem Bora began his film career in 1955 with the film Alın Yazısı, directed by Memduh Ün. From the late 1950s onward, he gained momentum and became one of the most sought-after actors of his time. He particularly attracted attention in the 1960s through his roles in melodramas and socially themed films.

In 1962, he gained widespread recognition through the film Acı Hayat, directed by Metin Erksan, in which he shared the lead roles with Türkan Şoray and Ayhan Light. His performance in this film solidified his place in Turkish cinema.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, he primarily appeared in Yeşilçam melodramas, taking on romantic and dramatic roles. In the 1980s, he expanded his work to include television series alongside films. In the 2000s, he appeared mostly in television projects.

Ekrem Bora described his approach to acting not merely as a profession but as a vocation and a way of life. He summarized his artistic philosophy with the words: “You will love your work, you will fall in love with your craft, and you will show it respect. Cinema has its own education.”
