Emin Çapa was born in 1967 in İzmit, Kocaeli. He grew up in a rural area as the child of a father who learned to read and write during his military service and a mother who completed only primary school. He completed his higher education at the Journalism Department of Istanbul University, which is also referred to in some sources as the Journalism Department of the Faculty of Communication at Istanbul University. Academically, he has focused on theories of economic integration, pursued graduate studies on the European Union (EU), and earned a doctorate in economics.
Çapa began his journalism career at a very young age, starting as an intern at the newspaper Hürriyet in 1984, the same year he enrolled in university. In 1989, he took up his first full-time position as an economic reporter at Tempo Magazine. He was among the founders of Genç Radyo, one of Turkey’s first private radio stations. He also briefly served as director of the Chamber of Marine Engineers and worked at TİSK due to his interest in labor-management relations and wage issues, engaging in collective bargaining negotiations. Returning to journalism, he worked for five years as an economic reporter at Sabah Newspaper and wrote weekly columns on industrial relations. During this period, he strengthened his expertise in industrial relations and the EU. Subsequently, he served as an advisor to the president at TÜSİAD during the terms of Muharrem Kayhan and Erkut Yücaoğlu. Emin Çapa is married to Selma Çapa and has a son who studied law and EU affairs at the University of Strasbourg.
A significant turning point in Emin Çapa’s television career came in November 1999 when he joined CNN TÜRK. He began as an editor and progressed through roles as Head of Economic Intelligence, Director of Economic News, and ultimately Director of Economics, a position he held until October 2020. During this long tenure at CNN TÜRK, he developed and presented various programs that shared information and analysis with viewers.
In 2012, he created the program “O Sırada,” exploring intriguing topics behind everyday phenomena, ranging from cleaning windows from a 150-meter height to examining the depths 39 meters below ground. In 2013, through his program “Aklın İzi,” he invited viewers to pursue reason and science in response to superstition, pseudoscience, and seemingly scientific deceptions. On this program, he addressed one specialized topic each week to counter Turkey’s growing distance from a scientific perspective. Topics included: “The First Genius of the 21st Century and Why Turkey Does Not Produce Geniuses?”, “Is Everest the Largest Mountain? Which Is the Largest Star?”, “What Is Speed?”, “Why Do We Age? Can Aging Be Stopped?”, “Foolishness That Changed History”, “The Fastest Computers,” and “Similarities Between Wars and Economics.”
Currently, he develops and presents the science program “Dünyanın 1001 Hali,” broadcast on CNN TÜRK, bringing to screen every noteworthy piece of information—from new technologies to lost knowledge, from distant stars to nearby cities. He also develops and presents the daily evening economic program “Paranın İzi,” which airs live on CNN TÜRK during weekdays. Çapa is known for explaining economics in clear, accessible language understandable to everyone, whether in economic bulletins or guest appearances on other programs. During election coverage, he remained on screen for over 18 consecutive hours alongside CNN TÜRK’s senior presenters and guests, conveying the messages and analyses behind the numbers. After leaving his position as Director of Economics at CNN TÜRK, he signed an agreement with Halk TV on October 14, 2020.
In addition to media and television, Emin Çapa actively participates in various social initiatives and educational activities. He delivers presentations at national and international seminars and events such as the Quality Congress, Tourism Summit, Bursa Quality Congress, İzmir Quality Congress, Marketing Summit, and TEDx Istanbul. At the invitation of universities, he gives more than twenty lectures annually, engaging with young audiences. He also provides media training for senior executives of Turkey’s leading companies. Voluntarily and out of personal passion, he organizes friendship tours for friends and close circles on themes such as “Palace and Ritual,” “Harem and Power,” “Empire and Architecture,” “Sinan and Süleymaniye,” and “Journey Through the Human Mind (Archaeology Museum).”
Çapa’s personal interests are highly diverse and reflect a broad accumulation of knowledge. He is an amateur gardener and has interests in astronomy, art history (particularly the relationship between art, politics, and economics), military strategy, astrophysics, astrobiology, history (especially the Early and Middle Ages), and archaeology. Had he not become a journalist, he would have pursued astronomy as a career and closely follows publications in the field. He is also a member of the International Astronomical Union.
