Origin

The word derives from the Arabic root z-y-f (زيف), meaning "to counterfeit, to falsify, to forge currency," specifically from the term tazyīf (تزييف). This term is the second verbal noun in the tafˁīl pattern of the Arabic verb zāfa (to be false). Historically, it was recorded in Meninski’s 1680 Thesaurus as "adulterare" (to commit fraud), in the 1900 Kamus-ı Türki as "to regard with suspicion, to discredit, and to mock," and in the first TDK dictionary of 1945 as "degradation."
