Erdal Tosun, born in Istanbul on 9 April 1963, is an actor in cinema and television. His father was the master stage actor Necdet Tosun and his brother is the actor Gürdal Tosun; Erdal Tosun grew up in a family deeply immersed in the arts. After completing his primary and secondary education in Istanbul, he graduated from the State Conservatory of Mimar Sinan University. His encounter with the arts began at the age of child; his interest in theatre deepened during his education.
Erdal Tosun’s artistic life took shape on theatre stages following his art education. He began his acting career at the Istanbul State Theatre, where he performed in numerous classical and contemporary plays. His successful portrayals of both dramatic and comedic roles on stage demonstrated his versatility as an actor.
Throughout his career, he also collaborated with Ferhan Şensoy’s Ortaoyuncular ensemble, establishing a distinctive presence on the alternative theatre scene. His achievements in theatre earned him recognition in short time, making him one of the most sought-after faces in television and cinema.
From the 1990s onward, Erdal Tosun became more visible on television screens, particularly through his portrayal of the character “Eyvah Necdet” in the series “Bir Demet Tiyatro”, a role that left a lasting impression on audiences. This character became a notable characterisation reflecting the cultural atmosphere of its time.
The artist appeared in numerous television series including “Çarli”, “Yedi Numara”, “Tatlı Hayat”, “Avrupa Yakası”, and “Elveda Rumeli”, among many others, securing his place as one of the most significant figures in Turkish television history.
He also appeared in important cinematic productions. His role in the films “Vizontele” and “Vizontele Tuuba” brought him widespread recognition, and he further appeared in popular films such as “G.O.R.A”, “Organize İşler”, “Kardeşim Benim”, “Küçük Esnaf”, and “Kutsal Damacana”. His collaborations with figures such as Yılmaz Erdoğan, Cem Yılmaz, and Tolga Çevik established him firmly within Turkish cinema.

In addition to his acting career, Erdal Tosun participated in numerous projects as a voice artist. His distinctive voice and tonal delivery made him a frequent choice for portraying animation characters and advertisement films.
In the 2006 animated film Arabalar (Cars), he provided the Turkish voice for the hippie character Fillmore. His humorous and relaxed portrayal of the character won the admiration of audiences. Additionally, in the globally popular online game League of Legends, with millions of players worldwide, he voiced the character Tahm Kench.
Erdal Tosun lost his life on 30 November 2016 following a traffic accident in Istanbul’s Sarıyer district. His death created a profound sense of loss within the artistic community and people. His funeral was held at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery, where he lies beside his brother Gürdal Tosun.
Erdal Tosun received widespread acclaim throughout his life for his performances in numerous productions. His portrayals in Bir Demet Tiyatro and Vizontele received particularly positive reviews from critics.
Following his death, numerous theatre groups, arts associations, and municipality organized events in his name, and some cultural venues were named after him.
