Erenköy Girls' High School

Erenköy Kız Lisesi is a prestigious educational institution located in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul, having operated since 1911. The institution currently continues its educational activities under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye with the status of a "project school".^【1】

Erenköy Kız Lisesi was established in 1911 during the Ottoman Empire period under the name "Numune Mektebi" in the Rıdvan Paşa Köşkü. In 1916 it adopted the name "Erenköy İnas Sultanisi" and gained the status of a girls’ high school. The main building of the school was acquired from Mabeyinci Faik Bey, while the building used as a dormitory, the Topçu Reisi Hacı Hüseyin Paşa Köşkü, was purchased from Hatice Sultan, daughter of Sultan Murad V, and incorporated into the school grounds.

Following a fire on 22 February 1945, the buildings suffered extensive damage, and educational activities continued in scattered locations until the 1954–1955 academic year. The main building was renovated in 1954, and an additional building was added in 1977. The school’s boarding section was converted into an Anatolian Fine Arts High School in 1990. The school buildings, demolished in 2019 under the earthquake regulation framework as part of urban transformation, were rebuilt by the Istanbul Governorate Project Coordination Unit (İPKB) and reopened for service on 6 September 2021.^【2】

The school is a public secondary education institution under the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye. On 20 May 2022, it was officially designated as a "project school" by the Ministry. In 1945, the Erenköy Kız Liseliler Derneği (EKLDer) was established to strengthen ties among alumni and the school community. The association serves as a bridge among graduates and provides students with various opportunities, including scholarship support.^【3】

Erenköy Kız Lisesi provides education in the standard format, with class hours running from 08:15 to 15:20. The school’s vision is to become a leading institution that draws strength from its past to contribute to planning for the future; its mission is to prepare students to become modern, socially aware individuals open to scientific advancements for higher education. The language of instruction is Turkish, and foreign language education is provided in English and German.^【4】

Student admissions are conducted in accordance with the centralized examination systems and e-school data of the Ministry of National Education of Türkiye. Placement processes are based on minimum and maximum score thresholds.

The school is located at Ömerpaşa Sokak No:82, Erenköy Neighborhood, Kadıköy District, Istanbul. The new campus, completed in 2021, includes 33 classrooms, 3 workshops, 1 multipurpose hall, 3 sports halls, 1 biology laboratory, 1 physics laboratory, 1 computer laboratory, 2 music classrooms, 1 art classroom, and 1 infirmary. Additionally, the school hosts two libraries, including the Alev Alatlı Library, opened in 2022, which houses approximately 22,327 books.^【5】

The school’s administrative leadership is headed by Principal Dr. Nihal Mert Gedik. The current teaching staff consists of 49 personnel.^【6】

The current student population is 620. Historically, the institution provided education for girls from across the vast territories of the Ottoman Empire (including Libya, Tunisia, Syria, and the Balkans) and played a key role in training Türkiye’s first professional female occupational groups. In the 2021–2022 graduation cycle, the rate of students admitted to higher education was recorded at 53%.^【7】

The school conducts sports activities in volleyball, basketball, futsal, cross-country running, athletics, wushu, badminton, and archery. In the social and cultural sphere, notable initiatives include the EKLDer Multivoice Choir, celebrations of International Women’s Rights Day, and publications such as the "Young Saplings Garden". Scientific activities include participation in TÜBİTAK 2204 A, TÜBİTAK 4006 Science Fairs, and Teknofest projects.^【8】

The institution participates in local and central projects such as e-Twinning, Hello World, Civilizations Reading, Nature Schools, Hearts of Schools Libraries, Richness of Our Language, and Zero Waste. At the international level, it organizes sister school partnerships and scientific excursions abroad.^【9】

Financial support activities for students are organized by the Erenköy Kız Liseliler Derneği (EKLDer). The association supports the "Microfon" platform, which connects scholarship recipients with donors, thereby contributing to educational equity. Additionally, funds generated through regular donation campaigns within the school community and association dues provide students with scholarship opportunities.^【10】
