Erkenek Tunnel

Erkenek Tunnel is one of the transportation projects aimed at strengthening north-south connectivity in Türkiye. Constructed along the D-850 Highway between Doğanşehir district of Malatya and Gölbaşı district of Adıyaman, tunnel has created a vital transportation corridor due to heavy truck traffic and challenging winter conditions. Construction of the tunnel began in 2011 but could not be completed within the planned timeline due to ground problems and deformations; however, it was opened to service on 28 May 2017. The twin-tube tunnel has a total length of 1,816 metres, and when including its connecting roads, the total length reaches 19,440 metres.

The Erkenek Tunnel was constructed to safely and fast cross the Karanlıkdere pass. The previous crossing time of 10 to 20 minute was reduced to 3 to 5 minutes after the tunnel entered service. This improvement has contributed to the economy by saving time and fuel.

Challenges Faced During Construction

Various geological and technical challenges were encountered during the construction process:

1. Ground Problems: Excessive swelling and deformation of the ground occurred during construction, causing delays in tunnel excavation works.

2. Safety Measures: Advanced engineering techniques were employed in the tunnel design to ensure driver safety.

3. Electro-Mechanical Works: After completion of excavation and support works, electro-mechanical and surfacing operations were carried out to bring the tunnel into service.

Economic and Transportation Significance of the Tunnel

According to reports prepared after the Erkenek Tunnel entered service:

Opening Ceremony and Official Attendance

The opening ceremony of the Erkenek Tunnel took place on 28 May 2017. Attendees included then Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications Ahmet Arslan, Customs and Trade Minister Bülent Tüfenkci, Malatya Governor Mustafa Soil, Adıyaman Governor Abdullah Erin, and numerous officials and citizens. Speeches delivered during the ceremony emphasized the tunnel’s anticipated contributions to the region economy and transportation network.

The Erkenek Tunnel stands out as a transportation investment linking East Anatolia to the Mediterranean. It has contributed to the development of trade and transportation in the region by eliminating travel difficulties experienced especially during winter months and providing a safe passage. Despite the technical and geological challenges encountered during construction, the completed and operational tunnel is regarded as one of Türkiye’s significant investments in its transportation infrastructure.
