The artist, born in Konya in 1974, graduated from Selçuk University’s Department of Public Administration in 1996 and from Istanbul University’s Department of Philosophy in 2021. While still in university, he began calligraphy lessons in 1994 with Hattat Dr. Hüseyin Öksüz and continued practice in the scripts of riq’a, sülüs, nesih, divanî, celî divanî, and ta’lik.
He received ijazah in sülüs-nesih in 2002 and in ta’lik in 2022. He completed his master’s studies in the Business Department and subsequently undertook preparatory training in various fields before pursuing doctoral research in the History of Art Department.
In 2005 he began his career as a research assistant at Selçuk University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, and earned his doctorate in 2008 with a thesis titled “The Band Scripts of the Ottoman Mosques of Istanbul.” He was appointed assistant professor in 2009, and in 2013 he was promoted to associate professor and appointed head of the department and member of the faculty governing board.
He has published numerous books, book chapters, and academic articles in the field of calligraphy. He has participated in many national and international exhibitions, symposia, and congresses held both within and outside Türkiye, and has served as curator for certain art projects and as editor for several publications.
He has been awarded a total of five prizes in international competitions organized by IRCICA and Albaraka, in various calligraphic scripts including sülüs, celî ta’lik, and muhakkak. In 2021, his work “Yâ Hazret-i Pîr: Sufi Leaders in Turkish Calligraphy” was awarded Book of the Year in the Classical Arts-Calligraphy category by the Türkiye Writers Union. He has also served on the juries of numerous international competitions. From 2013 to 2016 he served as an art advisor to the Konya Metropolitan Municipality.
Between 2011 and 2018, he participated in the International Mushaf Gatherings held in Dubai during the month of Ramadan under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture of the United Arab Emirates. He transcribed a total of six volumes of the Qur’an in the scripts of nesih, sülüs-nesih, muhakkak-sülüs-nesih, muhakkak-reyhanî, and sülüs-ince sülüs.
In 2016 he resumed his academic career at the Department of Islamic History and Arts, Faculty of Theology, Marmara University. In the same year he began teaching hüsn-i hat at Albaraka Art Academy; in 2017 he was appointed member of the Presidential Council of Advisors on National Palaces and assumed the role of calligraphy instructor at the Yıldız Şale Köşkü Center for Classical Turkish Arts. As of July 2020, he attained the rank of professor in the Department of the History of Turkish Islamic Arts, Faculty of Theology, Marmara University.
The artist’s calligraphic works are featured in numerous private and public collections both within and outside Türkiye. He continues to produce works in both classical and modern calligraphic styles while maintaining his academic research activities.
