Garfield is a three-dimensional computer-animated cinema film produced jointly by Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment in 2024. Based on the eponymous comic strip character created by Jim Davis, the film follows an adventure in which Garfield confronts his past and attempts to rebuild his relationships with his family. Blending humor and action elements, the film is crafted using modern animation techniques.

The film begins with Garfield as an abandoned kitten, left behind by a street cat named Vic. Today, Garfield lives a comfortable life in the city with his owner Jon Arbuckle and his loyal dog companion Odie. However, Vic’s sudden reappearance forces Garfield to confront his former family and reckon with his past. A criminal scheme involving Vic drags Garfield and Odie into an unwanted adventure. Throughout the journey, Garfield uses both his intelligence and emotional depth to overcome dangers.

The film is structured around themes of belonging, family bonds, trust, abandonment, and forgiveness. The protagonist’s process of confronting his past is explored as a journey of personal transformation, while humorous elements support action sequences that broaden the film’s appeal to wider age groups. Interpersonal trust and the theme of taking responsibility are also subtly emphasized.

Garfield was released internationally on 24 May 2024. Within its first three weeks, the film earned approximately 250 million US dollars worldwide, and its total box office revenue surpassed 300 million dollars during its theatrical run. Its performance outside the United States, particularly in European and Asian markets, was notably successful.

Mark Dindal directed the film, with the screenplay written by Paul A. Kaplan, Mark Torgove, and David Reynolds. Production was handled by John Cohen and Broderick Johnson. The animation was produced by DNEG Animation studios, with character designs faithfully adapted to remain true to the original comic strip aesthetic. The film was produced in three dimensions using contemporary CGI technology, and its audio-mix was completed in Dolby Atmos format.

The film’s score was composed by John Debney. The visual style was preserved in homage to the classic Garfield universe, yet modernized through dynamic camera movements and updated scene compositions.
