German Bridge is a bridge located in the city of Adıyaman in Türkiye. The bridge constitutes an important structural example at both regional and international levels due to its construction date and architectural features.

History of the German Bridge

The construction of the German Bridge dates back to the early 20th century, during the late Ottoman Empire and the early years of the Republic. The bridge is a continuation of the Baghdad Railway Project, carried out under cooperation agreements between the Ottoman Empire and Germany. Although the Baghdad Railway Project began during the Ottoman period, construction of this bridge was completed after the founding of the Republic of Türkiye in 1927. The bridge was finished in 1929. German technical support and engineering expertise were utilized during its construction. During this period, numerous bridges and viaducts were built along the railway route. This bridge in Adıyaman emerged as one of these projects. The reason it is commonly known as the German Bridge is that the majority of the engineers involved in the project were German.

Architectural Features

The German Bridge is an arch bridge constructed using cut stone. The structure reflects the engineering principles of its time in terms of arch spans and stonework. The bridge’s load-bearing system consists of multiple arches, ensuring balanced load distribution. The materials used were sourced from local resources in the region, a feature that enhanced the bridge’s environmental integration and contributed to its durability over many years.
