GJ-X Stealth UAV

The GJ-X Stealth UAV is a high-altitude, long-range unmanned combat aerial vehicle developed by China, featuring a wide wingspan and low radar signature (stealth) characteristics. The platform is regarded as one of the most advanced examples of China’s strategic unmanned systems program. The GJ-X, distinguished by its flying wing design, has been developed for reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and precision strike missions within modern warfare doctrine.

History and Production Status

The GJ-X project was developed as part of China’s fifth-generation unmanned aerial vehicle programs initiated in the 2020s. Led by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the project is considered a continuation of the previously unveiled GJ-11 “Sharp Sword” platform. It was publicly revealed in October 2025 through the first released flight footage, marking a new phase in the modernization of China’s air power.

The GJ-X was first shown to the public during a test flight conducted by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force in October 2025. Flight imagery was captured during a test in southern China (Xinjiang region) and quickly published by Chinese state media. The system is currently undergoing operational testing and is being prepared for active service. Western defense analysts assess the GJ-X as China’s ambitious strategic unmanned aerial vehicle platform; however, the Chinese government has not issued any official statements regarding the system^【1】.

The GJ-X is a tailless, jet-powered unmanned combat aircraft with a wingspan of approximately 42 meters. It is propelled by two embedded air-intake twin jet engines, and its blended wing-body structure is coated with composite materials designed to reduce radar visibility. The platform’s mission profile encompasses long-range reconnaissance, electronic intelligence gathering, precision strikes, and strategic strike operations; its command and control is supported by satellite-based communications and a semi-autonomous flight control architecture.

Mission and Operational Use

The GJ-X has been designed to support manned bomber aircraft in the People’s Liberation Army Air Force’s long-range air operations. The aircraft is capable of conducting independent missions as well as coordinated operations with piloted platforms. It performs long-duration high-altitude patrols, detects and suppresses enemy radar networks, and carries out precision strikes against strategic targets.
