Gölyaka Nature Walking Trails encompass natural walking routes within the boundaries of Gölyaka district, located in the southwest of Düzce province, stretching across high mountain slopes, alpine meadows, waterfalls, and wetland areas. The region attracts attention for its four-season accessibility to nature tourism and its ecological diversity.

Geographical Structure and Routes

The trails in Gölyaka consist of several different routes. Notable routes include the Efteni Lake – Güzeldere Waterfall, Güzeldere – Balıklı Alpine Meadow, and Aksu Creek – Kardüz Alpine Meadow paths.

The Efteni Lake – Güzeldere Waterfall trail is approximately 6 km long and of moderate difficulty. The starting point is the Toptepe Observation Area. This route includes a descent and ascent of 182 steps.

The Güzeldere Waterfall – Balıklı Alpine Meadow trail is a walking route of approximately 23 km. The gradient increases at times and requires good physical condition. The Aksu Creek – Kardüz Alpine Meadow trail is a more challenging 24 km route, notable for its undulating terrain. All three trails are suitable for hikers, observers, and campers.

Ecological Features

The forest cover in Gölyaka’s trails is rich due to the influence of the Black Sea climate. Beech, oak, fir, and hornbeam trees are widespread in the region. Particularly, the forest structure around Güzeldere and Kardüz holds significant importance for both faunal and floral diversity. The area surrounding Efteni Lake serves as a migration and settlement site for waterfowl, offering an important wetland ecosystem. Additionally, the humid microclimate formed along the waterfalls and stream beds contributes to dense vegetation growth.

Recreational Use and Tourism Potential

The walking trails in Gölyaka are suitable for activities such as hiking (trekking), birdwatching, sport fishing, camping, and nature photography. The trails cater to both individual visitors and guided groups.

Under promotional campaigns conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Gölyaka district has been identified as one of Düzce province’s most richly endowed areas for walking and recreation. Sustainable infrastructure investments are needed to effectively utilize this potential.

Infrastructure and Accessibility

Access to the walking trails in Gölyaka is possible via paved roads. The starting points of the trails are located in Gölyaka town center or its surrounding villages.

Although directional signs are placed intermittently along the Efteni Lake – Güzeldere route, signage and information infrastructure are lacking toward Kardüz and Balıklı Alpine Meadow. Therefore, hikers are advised to carry maps and GPS-enabled devices.

Due to the natural character of the trails, which are vulnerable to human activity, it is essential that hikers act with environmental sensitivity. Particularly, the area around Efteni Lake is a habitat for protected bird species.

Co-management of the walking routes with the local community would be effective in achieving a balance between conservation and use. Informational signage promoting cultural awareness, non-damaging directional markers, and waste management systems should be introduced in the region.
