Gördes El Halısı

Gördes Hand-Knotted Carpet is one of the significant examples of Türkiye’s traditional hand-knotted carpet heritage. In 1996, the Gördes Municipality submitted an application for geographical indication status; it was officially registered on 14 November 1997 under the category of “geographical indication.” This registration was carried out under Decree-Law No. 555 on the Protection of Geographical Indications, ensuring legal protection for the product’s technical characteristics and production methods.

Pattern and Color Characteristics

Gördes hand-knotted carpets are typically woven in prayer rug dimensions. Two primary pattern types are prominent:

1. Mihrap Patterns: A mihrap is placed at the center of the carpet. Within the mihrap, one of the following motifs appears: a lamp, a water jug, or leaf designs. The mihrap borders are surrounded by spiral-shaped branches and symmetrically filled on both sides.
2. Corner-Navel Patterns: These are formed by the arrangement of stylized botanical and geometric motifs on the carpet surface to create corner and navel elements.

In both pattern types, the mihrap, corner, and navel sections are uniformly colored. Characteristic colors in Gördes carpets include navy blue, blue, red, green, and cream tones.

Monitoring and Protection

The geographical indication status of the Gördes hand-knotted carpet is subject to continuous monitoring throughout its production and marketing processes. Monitoring is conducted by regional directorates, factory directorates, and quality control commissions. Carpets produced in deviation from the established technical specifications may not be labeled as “Gördes Hand-Knotted Carpet.”
