The Gördes handwoven carpet is one of the significant examples of Türkiye’s traditional carpet-weaving heritage. A geographical indication application was submitted by the Gördes Municipality in 1996, and on 14 November 1997, it was registered as a “Protected Geographical Indication ”. The registration was carried out under Decree Law No. 555 on the Protection of Geographical Indications, legally safeguarding the product’s technical characteristics and production method.

Design and Color Characteristics

Gördes carpets are generally woven in prayer rug dimensions. Two main design types are prominent:

  • Mihrab Designs: The center of the carpet features a mihrab. Inside the mihrab, motifs such as a lamp, pitcher, or leaf appear. The mihrab decorations are surrounded by helical curved branches and symmetrically filled from both sides.
  • Corner-Medallion Designs: Stylized floral and geometric motifs are distributed to form corners and medallions on the carpet surface.

In both design types, the mihrab, corner, and medallion areas are single-colored. Characteristic colors in Gördes carpets include navy, blue, red, green, and cream tones.

Technical Specifications

The Gördes handwoven carpet belongs to the Gördes carpet type. The technical and material features used in its production are as follows:

  • Knot Type: Turkish knot (double knot)
  • Quality: Approximately 1,050 knots per dm² (30x35)
  • Pile Height: 5–7 mm
  • Yarn Specifications:
  • Knot yarn: 3.5/2 Nm wool
  • Warp yarn: 4/3 Nm wool

  • Warp: 720
  • Thick weft: 200

This technical structure is a key factor determining the carpet’s durability and weaving quality.

Inspection and Protection

Inspections are carried out by regional directorates, factory management, and quality control commissions. Any production that does not meet the specified technical criteria cannot use the name “Gördes Handwoven Carpet.”
