Göynük Canyon is a natural formation located in the Göynük town of Kemer district in Antalya, at the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. It has formed over approximately 2 million years and stands out with both its natural structure and historical traces.

Geographical Location and Formation

The canyon is situated in the Kemer district of Antalya and has emerged as a result of the region's geological processes. Its location at the foothills of the Taurus Mountains has played a significant role in its formation. This feature makes the area particularly attractive for nature hikes and exploration activities.

Hiking Routes

The main route leading to Göynük Canyon starts from the Gedelma settlement and passes through smaller settlements such as Meşeçukuru, collectively known as the Göynük Plateau. The Lycian Way trail continues downward from the Söğütçük settlement, initially running parallel to the road before following an alternative path along a stream that descends to Göynük Creek. This section includes wooden stair crossings and short hill climbs along the stream. Notably, at a certain point within Göynük Creek, the canyon narrows due to the merging of two separate water flows from the right and left branches. This area poses a risk for those without technical descent equipment and should be considered outside the Lycian Way route.

Visitor Information

The canyon is located along the route from Antalya city center toward Kemer. Upon reaching Kemer, following the Göynük signs on the road is sufficient for navigation. Visiting hours are fixed between 08:00–19:00 during both the summer (April 1–October 31) and winter (October 31–April 1) seasons. The area is open to visitors every day. According to current information, the entrance fee is 180₺.

Activities in the Area

Activities available at Göynük Canyon include hiking, swimming in cool waters, adventure sports (such as ziplining, climbing, and rafting), and picnicking. Additionally, the canyon’s natural formations and scenic landscapes offer excellent opportunities for photography.

Historical Context

Beyond its natural beauty, the region also features several noteworthy historical settlements. One such site is Mnara, located on Mount Kavak at an elevation of 1,470 meters above sea level. This settlement contains ruins from the Hellenistic period, extending through the Roman and early Byzantine eras. The structures of Mnara reflect the region’s strategic significance and historical development, contributing to the cultural heritage surrounding Göynük Canyon.

Göynük Canyon, located in the Kemer district of Antalya, is a region shaped by natural processes and rich in historical traces. Hiking routes along the Lycian Way, local services, and various outdoor activities highlight both its geographical and cultural significance. These elements make Göynük Canyon a site of great interest for both nature and history enthusiasts.
