Güntekin Onay (born 12 October 1971, Adana) is a Turkish sports commentator television presenter and sports writer. He is particularly known for his football match commentary and television programs. Güntekin Onay has worked for many years at Turkey’s leading sports television channels and has won several awards.

Early Life and Education

Güntekin Onay was born on 12 October 1971 in Adana. His father is the well-known Turkish footballer and former coach Gündüz Tekin Onay. After completing primary education he graduated from Özel Işık Lisesi and began his higher education at Bilkent University before transferring to the Tourism Department of Boğaziçi University. Onay speaks English Italian and Spanish.

Professional Career

Onay entered sports journalism in 1992. He began his career after being selected for the new sports team established by Şansal Büyüka at Kanal 6. In the same year he started working as the foreign news editor at Kanal 6 and first commentated on matches from the Copa América. He later covered the “Borussia Dortmund – Internazionale” match in Germany. During the 1992–1993 season he began commentating on Turkish league matches with his first commentary being the game between Kocaelispor – Beşiktaş JK.

He presented sports news on Kanal 6’s morning bulletins and then joined Şansal Büyüka on the program “Stadyum”. He later moved to Kanal D where he appeared on the program “Televole”. In 1996 he joined Show TV and in 1997 he moved to Star TV where he presented the “Telegol” program and commentated on UEFA Champions League matches.

Onay subsequently transferred to NTV where he created and presented the program “%100 Futbol” alongside Rıdvan Dilmen. This program aired after league matches and following Turkish teams’ European matches. On 26 July 2017 he moved to BeIN Sports Türkiye and continued broadcasting the same program there.

Awards

Throughout his television career Güntekin Onay has received numerous awards. Among these the Golden Butterfly Awards stand out. Alongside Rıdvan Dilmen he received the following awards for the program %100 Futbol:

• Golden Butterfly Award for Best Sports Program in 2010 2011 2012 2015 and 2016
• Golden Star Award for Best Sports Presenter in 2015
• Golden Star Award for Best Sports Program in 2017
• Culture and Art Award for Best Sports Program in 2013
• Ayaklı Gazete TV Yıldızları Award for Best Male Sports Presenter in 2010

Personal Life

Güntekin Onay is married to journalist and television presenter Serra Okumuş Onay. Serra Okumuş is a graduate of Galatasaray High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Marmara University. She worked for many years at the NTV channel. The couple has one daughter and one son.

Current Work

Since 2017 Onay has been working at BeIN Sports Türkiye where he continues to present the %100 Futbol program.
