Halay

Origin

There are two distinct views regarding the origin of the word halay. The first view argues that the word is derived from the Turkish word alay, meaning "community". The second view holds that the word stems from hilayi (or halayi), a term in the Kurmanji dialect of Kurdish that fundamentally means "to stand up, to dance". From a linguistic perspective, this concept is derived from the verbs hildan or haldan in the same dialect, which carry the meanings "to play, to jump".
