Haluk Bilginer (full name Nihat Haluk Bilginer; born June 5, 1954, İzmir) is a Turkish actor active in theatre, cinema, and television. Since 1977, he has appeared in stage and screen productions both in Türkiye and the United Kingdom, gaining national and international recognition. He began his theatre career at the Istanbul State Theatre, founded Tiyatro Stüdyosu in 1990, and Oyun Atölyesi in 1999. Bilginer has appeared in numerous film and television productions and won the International Emmy Award for Best Actor in 2019 for his role in the series Şahsiyet.
Haluk Bilginer was born on June 5, 1954, in the Seferihisar district of İzmir, Türkiye. His father, Tahsin Bilginer, worked in insurance. He completed his primary education at İzmir Türk Koleji. He developed an interest in theatre at a young age and decided to pursue formal education in the field.
After completing high school, he studied acting at the Ankara State Conservatory and graduated in 1977. He then moved to the United Kingdom to study advanced acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), graduating in 1981. During his education, he specialized in classical theatre, particularly Shakespeare.
After graduating from LAMDA, he acted in various theatres in England. He performed on prestigious stages such as the Royal Shakespeare Company. He gained popularity in the UK for his role as Mehmet Osman in the BBC series EastEnders. In 1987, he returned to Türkiye and continued his theatre and film career.
One of his first TV projects in Türkiye was the series Çalıkuşu, in which he starred alongside Gülriz Sururi and Engin Cezzar. From 1987 onwards, he appeared in numerous films. Notable performances include roles in Gece Melek ve Bizim Çocuklar, Masumiyet, Filler ve Çimen, İstanbul Kanatlarımın Altında, and Harem Suare.
Bilginer has received numerous awards from various festivals and institutions in theatre and cinema. In 1998, he won Best Actor at the 35th Antalya Film Festival for Masumiyet. In the 2000s, he reached a wide audience through TV series like Tatlı Hayat and Ezel. In 2019, he won the Best Actor award at the International Emmy Awards for his role as Agâh Beyoğlu in the digital series Şahsiyet. This award marked Türkiye's first Emmy in this category.
Bilginer played a pioneering role in the founding of private theatres to expand theatrical production in Türkiye. In 1990, he co-founded Tiyatro Stüdyosu in Istanbul with Zuhal Olcay. In 1999, he established Oyun Atölyesi, which staged both classical and contemporary plays.
At Oyun Atölyesi, the repertoire included classics such as Hamlet, Cyrano de Bergerac, and King Lear, as well as contemporary plays.
