Hancock (Film)

Released in 2008, *Hancock*, directed by Peter Berg, is an action and comedy film that offers a different perspective on traditional superhero movies. Plot

John Hancock (Will Smith), despite possessing extraordinary abilities such as immortality, super strength, and flight, causes millions of dollars in damage to the city during his heroic acts, struggles with alcoholism, and is despised by the public. One day, he saves the life of public relations expert Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) during a train accident. Grateful, Ray offers to help Hancock improve his public image and transform him into a true hero in the eyes of the people.

Following Ray’s advice, Hancock goes to jail, generates public sympathy, and returns as a more responsible hero. However, during this process, a strange tension develops between Hancock and Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron). It soon becomes clear that Mary also possesses special powers and that the two are the last surviving members of an immortal couple bound together for thousands of years. The film explores Hancock’s struggle to become a hero to the public while confronting his mysterious past.

Theme

The central theme of the film is the transformation of an anti-hero and his quest for social acceptance. *Hancock* critiques the loneliness and burden of being a superhero with a satirical tone. It also offers modern commentary on public perception, image management, and how media can elevate or destroy a figure. In the second half of the film, themes of fate, love, and sacrifice come to the forefront. Through the story of Hancock and Mary, the film examines how their powers fade when they grow close, portraying the tragedy of their inability to be together and the idea of self-sacrifice for the sake of loved ones.

Production and Development

The screenplay, written by Vincent Ngo and Vince Gilligan, was developed in Hollywood for many years under the title *Tonight, He Comes* and was considered by various directors and actors before reaching its final form. After numerous revisions, the project was finally brought to life with Will Smith in the lead role.

Produced by Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter, Michael Mann, and Will Smith, the film was shot largely in Los Angeles, California. The city’s iconic highways, streets, and buildings served as natural backdrops for the action sequences. Particularly notable are the car chase on the highway and the bank robbery scenes, which highlight a blend of visual effects and practical filming. The film’s score was composed by John Powell.
