Hilar Caves

Hilar Caves are located within the boundaries of the Ergani district of Diyarbakır province in Türkiye, approximately 3 kilometers from the district center. The caves are situated near the Tigris River, on the northeastern part of the Ergani Plain. Due to their proximity to the settlement, access is easy and they are readily reachable by visitors.

Historical and Archaeological Significance

The Hilar Caves are located immediately adjacent to Çayönü Höyüğü, one of Türkiye’s most important archaeological sites, and have been studied in conjunction with this mound throughout history. Excavations and research in the region have revealed that Hilar was inhabited since the Neolithic period. Evidence of settlement extends as far back as the 10th millennium BCE. During prehistoric times, the caves were used for shelter and habitation, and in later periods they were adapted for various other purposes.

Cave Structures and Architectural Features

The Hilar region contains numerous rock-cut tombs, residential units, and other architectural structures formed by shaping the natural surface. These structures were created by carving into natural rock masses and reflect a high level of stoneworking skill. Some caves are arranged in stacked or side-by-side configurations, forming multi-level settlement areas.

Tomb Chambers and Religious Structures

The rock-cut tomb chambers within the caves reflect the burial traditions of the region and indicate a religious or ceremonial function. These tombs are typically single-chambered; some feature niches and altar-like structures. Additionally, certain sections of the caves contain sacred areas, niches, and offering depressions. These areas are believed to have been used for ritual purposes.

Relationship with Surrounding Settlements

The Hilar Caves are primarily studied in relation to the nearby Çayönü Höyüğü, and data obtained from excavations at the mound have helped clarify the function of the caves. The connection between the settlement at Çayönü and Hilar provides important insights into the living patterns of early agricultural and pastoral communities.

Conservation and Tourism Status

Today, the Hilar Caves are protected by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Promotion and management efforts are carried out by the Diyarbakır Governorship and the Ergani District Governorship. The area stands out as a significant tourist destination due to its historical and natural features. Preservation of the site’s archaeological and cultural value remains a top priority.
