Hunter x Hunter (2011–2014) is a Japanese anime series based on the manga of the same name by Yoshihiro Togashi, which aired from 2011 to 2014. Produced by Madhouse Studio, it is a revised adaptation of the 1999 version and consists of 148 episodes. The story follows the adventures of young Gon Freecss, who dreams of becoming a famous “Hunter” like his father. Hunters are licensed professionals specialized in particular missions. Gon enters the grueling Hunter Examination in search of his father and befriends companions such as Kurapika, Leorio, and Killua along the way. This youth-oriented anime stands out for its themes of adventure, action, and friendship.

Background and Production

Hunter x Hunter is based on a manga series begun by Yoshihiro Togashi in 1998 in the youth manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. The manga has sold over 65 million copies in Japan. The first anime adaptation, produced by Nippon Animation in 1999, ran for 62 episodes but was left unfinished due to interruptions in the manga caused by Togashi’s health issues. In 2011, Madhouse Studio undertook a complete reboot, producing a new anime series that covers a much larger portion of the manga.

Plot

Hunter x Hunter tells the story of 12-year-old Gon Freecss as he embarks on a journey to find his father, Ging Freecss, a world-renowned Hunter. The narrative begins with Gon’s participation in the Hunter Examination, which leads him through challenging arcs such as Greed Island (a story set within a game world) and the Chimera Ant Arc (a storyline in which giant ants threaten humanity). During the examination, Gon meets Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio. The friendships he forms form the emotional core of the story. The series explores themes of friendship, courage, and personal growth. Realistic character development and moral dilemmas elevate the narrative to a universal level.
