Inönü University (INU) is a public university established by Law No. 1872, the “Inönü University Law.” This law was adopted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye on 28 January 1975 and by the Republic Senate on 25 March 1975, and came into effect upon publication in the Official Gazette on 3 April 1975. The university operates in Malatya, with its main campus located 10 km from the city center.
History
Following the enactment of its founding law, Inönü University began providing educational services in the 1976-1977 academic year. In its early years, it operated from the building of Sadreddin Konevî Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, and in the 1984-1985 academic year, it moved to its current central campus spanning 7000 decares. Since its establishment in 1975, the university has continued to expand and has produced a total of 161,110 graduates to date.
Campuses
The university conducts its educational, scientific research and application activities at its main campus and other campuses within the city.
- Central Campus: Located 10 km from the city center on a 7000-decare area, the central campus includes classrooms, laboratories, a central library, multi-purpose cultural halls, social facilities, and sports and recreation areas. It also houses educational and application centers serving students with disabilities, as well as separate dormitories for female and male students. Additionally, the Inönü Museum, established in memory of the prominent statesman İsmet İnönü, and the Inönü University Institutional Museum located in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences building are situated here.
- Other Campuses: The university has campuses for the Malatya Vocational School and the Malatya OSB Vocational School located in the Malatya Organized Industrial Zone.
- District Campuses: Academic units are also available through vocational schools in districts including Akçadağ, Arapgir, Battalgazi, Darende, Hekimhan, Kale and Yeşilyurt.

The university provides educational services to a total of 34,767 active students in undergraduate, associate degree and graduate programs. Student admissions are conducted through the centralized examination system (YKS) and special aptitude tests for certain programs.

International Activities
As part of its internationalization efforts, the university implements student and staff exchange programs. Through programs such as Erasmus+, Work&Travel, Mevlana and Farabi, students are provided with educational opportunities both within and outside Türkiye. Orientation and mentoring programs are organized for international students coming to the university. Community activities are also conducted to encourage dialogue and knowledge sharing by connecting students interested in learning foreign languages with those who already speak them.

- International Rankings: According to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, the university ranks among the top institutions globally and within Türkiye, performing notably in the “Research Quality” category. It holds a top position in the URAP ranking across Türkiye and has entered the global top 500 universities in the SCImago ranking in the categories of Research, Innovation and Social Impact. Student Life
The central campus features multi-purpose cultural halls, social facilities, and sports and recreation areas to support students’ extracurricular activities. The university has adopted the “Disability-Free Campus” concept with accessibility adaptations for students with disabilities. The central library provides students with extensive access to printed and electronic resources for research and study. Medical students from the Faculty of Medicine undertake practical training at the Turgut Özal Medical Center, while engineering students from the Faculty of Engineering gain practical experience at Malatya Teknokent.
