Competing in the Süper Lig, the club was originally founded in 1990 as Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor. In 2014, the football division separated from the municipal organization and was rebranded as Istanbul Başakşehir FK. The club was initially established in 1990 as Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor, focusing on amateur sports before transitioning into professional football. In 2014, the football division was restructured and renamed Istanbul Başakşehir FK after separating from municipal administration.

The club made its Süper Lig debut in the 2014-2015 season, finishing 4th and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. Over the years, the club has consistently competed in European competitions, achieving its greatest success by winning the Süper Lig title in the 2019-2020 season.
