İzmir Bakırçay University (İZBÜ)

Izmir Bakircay University (İZBÜ) is a public university established in İzmir by Law No. 6745, adopted on 20 August 2016. The university is located in the Seyrek area of the Menemen district in İzmir. The institution’s core educational strategy is based on developing accredited programs, conducting scientific research and development (R&D) activities, and participating in social responsibility projects.

The establishment of the university was enacted through Article 169 added to Law No. 2809 by Article 18 of Law No. 6745, published in the Official Gazette No. 29804 on 7 September 2016. During its founding process, the university was planned to include five faculties (Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, and Faculty of Health Sciences), three vocational schools (Vocational School of Applied Sciences, Vocational School of Justice, and Vocational School of Foreign Languages), and three institutes (Institute of Natural Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences, and Institute of Health Sciences). The university officially began academic instruction in 2018 with approximately 850 students.

Academic units have since been restructured: The Faculty of Medicine was established on 25 May 2018 by Council of Ministers Decision No. 2018/11593; the Faculty of Pharmacy was established on 25 December 2019 by Presidential Decision No. 2019/1911. On 10 October 2019, the Kınık Health Services Vocational School was established by decision of the Higher Education Council. On 28 March 2020, the previous institutes were closed and replaced by a single Graduate Education Institute; in the same year, on 27 May, the Vocational School’s name was changed to Menemen Vocational School.

The main campus of the university is located in the Seyrek region of the Menemen district in İzmir. The campus houses academic buildings, administrative offices, specialized laboratories for each faculty, a central library, social facilities, and sports areas. The central library provides access to both printed and electronic collections to meet students’ academic needs.

The university comprises the following units offering education and instruction at undergraduate, associate, and graduate levels:

Student admissions are conducted through the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS). The university has a total of 8,681 enrolled students. ^【1】 Students are placed in programs based on results from centralized exams organized by the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM).

Izmir Bakircay University offers undergraduate and associate degree programs through its faculties and vocational schools.

Undergraduate programs are delivered across various faculties.

The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture offers programs in Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical-Electronics Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.

The Faculty of Human and Social Sciences offers programs in Social and Human Sciences including Geography (with an option for citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), Psychology, Sociology, and History.

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers programs in Health Sciences including Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Nursing, Audiology, and Health Administration.

The Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences offers programs in Economics and Business Administration, as well as internationally oriented programs in International Trade and Business (in English) and Management Information Systems (in English).

Other Undergraduate Programs: The Faculty of Law offers the Law program; the Faculty of Medicine offers the Medicine program.

Associate degree programs are delivered through vocational schools to meet the demand for qualified mid-level personnel in specific sectors. The Menemen Vocational School offers programs in Laboratory and Veterinary Technology.

The university supports student and staff mobility through international exchange programs such as Erasmus+ and Mevlana. Under its internationalization policy, the university has bilateral cooperation agreements with higher education institutions in various countries. Partner institutions include Vilnius University and Vytautas Magnus University from Lithuania, D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics from Bulgaria, and the University of the Azores from Portugal. The Office of International Relations coordinates exchange programs and international student admission processes.

The university supports the encouragement of academic and scientific work. Faculty research activities are supported by TÜBİTAK projects. Within the university, there are 12 research and application centers active in the fields of medical-health, science-engineering, and social-humanities, as well as 15 coordination units supporting academic and administrative functions. • TÜBİTAK Turkey-Based International Scientific Publications Incentive (UBYT): Prof. Dr. Şermin TAĞIL was awarded this incentive by TÜBİTAK for international scientific publications.

• TÜBİTAK Publication Incentive (UBYT) 650388 (SCIe): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emine UÇAR received a TÜBİTAK publication incentive award for her publication indexed in international scientific databases (SCIe).

• TÜBİTAK Publication Incentive (UBYT) 650390 (SCIe): Dr. Murat UÇAR received a TÜBİTAK publication incentive award for his publication indexed in international scientific databases (SCIe).

• Travel Grants for Young Mathematicians (ISAAC): Dr. Bahriye KARACA received a travel grant from ISAAC (International Society for Analysis, its Applications and Computation) for young mathematicians.

• Ciğli District Governorship Certificate of Achievement (Ministry of Interior): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Fatoş Dilan KÖSEOĞLU was honored with a certificate of achievement by the Ciğli District Governorship.

• Most Successful Thesis Awards, Institute of Natural Sciences, Ege University: Research Assistant Yeşim AYGÜL received the most successful thesis award from Ege University Institute of Natural Sciences for her thesis.

• Third Place Oral Presentation Award (Oncology Nurses Association): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derya ÇINAR won third place in an oral presentation at an event organized by the Oncology Nurses Association.

• Cervical Collar with Personalized Digital Controlled Traction Method (Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology): Prof. Dr. Kadir GÖK was awarded for his project on a cervical collar applying a personalized digital controlled traction method by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

• Publication Incentive Award (TÜBİTAK): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Nurhan DUDAKLI received a national-level scientific publication incentive award from TÜBİTAK.

• Technology for Humanity Competition, Health and First Aid Category, University and Above Level (Teknofest): Prof. Dr. Orhan ER won an award in the Health and First Aid category at the Teknofest Technology for Humanity Competition at the university and above level.

• Best Oral Presentation (9th International Congress on Veterinary and Animal Sciences - ICVAS): Prof. Dr. Ayşe Canan YAZICI GÜVERCİN received the Best Oral Presentation award at the 9th International Congress on Veterinary and Animal Sciences (ICVAS).

• Academic Publication Incentive (İZBU): Prof. Dr. Şükran KONCA was awarded an academic publication incentive by İzmir Bakırçay University.

• Contribution to Institutional Development Award (İZBU): Prof. Dr. Özge TÜZÜN ÖZMEN was honored by İzmir Bakırçay University for her contributions to institutional development.

• Second Place Oral Presentation Award (İzmir Oncology Group): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Eyup KEBABÇI received second place in an oral presentation at an event organized by the İzmir Oncology Group.

• 2021 Most SCI-Published Academician Award, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (İZBU): Prof. Dr. Kadir GÖK was honored as the academician with the most publications indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in 2021.

• First Place Article Award: Mary Hanna Memorial Journalism Award (American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses - ASPAN): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Şeyda BİNAY YAZ won first place in the Mary Hanna Memorial Journalism Award from the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN).

• External Achievement and Visibility Award (İZBU): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Şeyda BİNAY YAZ was honored by the university for her external achievements and visibility contributions.

• Effects of Post-UV-Curing on the Flexural and Absorptive Behaviour of FDM-3D-Printed Poly(lactic acid) Parts (İZBU): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Tarkan AKDERYA was awarded by the university in recognition of his scientific publication supported by a TÜBİTAK award.

• Certificate of Achievement (Ciğli District Governorship): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi İlker KIZILOĞLU was honored with a certificate of achievement by the Ciğli District Governorship.

• Third Place Scientific Article Award (Turkish Neurosurgical Society): Prof. Dr. Hanefi ÖZBEK received third place in a scientific article competition organized by the Turkish Neurosurgical Society.

• ECND Competition Award 2023 (European Oncology Nursing Society): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derya ÇINAR won an award in the ECND competition organized by the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS).

• Ayşen Melek Aytuğ Koşan Research Award (Association for Medical Education Development): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hale SEZER was awarded a research grant by the Association for Medical Education Development.

• Third Place Best Research Award (Turkish Ophthalmological Society): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saadet Özen AKARCA DİZAKAR received third place in the Best Research category from the Turkish Ophthalmological Society.

• Discipline in Institutional Work (Academic Staff) (İZBU): Research Assistant Betül YÜRDEM was recognized by the university for excellence in institutional work discipline in the academic staff category.

• TÜBİTAK Turkey-Based International Scientific Publications Incentive (UBYT): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Sabahattin Anıl ARI was awarded by TÜBİTAK for international scientific publications.

• TÜBİTAK International Scientific Publication Incentive Award: Prof. Dr. Aysel ŞAHİN KIZIL received an international scientific publication incentive award from TÜBİTAK.

• EONS16 Grant (European Oncology Nursing Society): Assoc. Prof. Dr. Derya ÇINAR received a grant from the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) for the EONS16 event.

• Best Presentation of the Year (Turkish Neurosurgical Society): Prof. Dr. Hanefi ÖZBEK received the Best Presentation of the Year award from the Turkish Neurosurgical Society.

• Finalist, Innovative Health Professional of the Year Category (DoktorClub and Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine): Prof. Dr. Kadir GÖK was selected as a finalist in the Innovative Health Professional of the Year category at a competition organized by DoktorClub and Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine.

• Dr. Aysun - Cihat Ünlü Special Award (Turkish-German Gynecology Education, Research and Service Foundation): Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Gökçe KAYNAK BAYRAK was honored with a special award by the Turkish-German Gynecology Education, Research and Service Foundation.

• Publication Incentive (Ulakbim): Prof. Dr. Şükran KONCA received a publication incentive award from Ulakbim.

Students have access to social facilities including the central library, cafeterias, and sports areas, all located on the main campus. The university also supports participation in social projects.
