Jutta Leerdam is a modern speed skater who grew up within the Netherlands’ speed skating tradition and specializes in sprint distances. Her career has followed a multi-layered developmental path, beginning in youth categories and progressing to world championships and Olympic Games.
Jutta Leerdam was born on 30 December 1998 in ’s-Gravenzande, the Netherlands. She grew up in an active sporting environment. Her earliest sporting experiences were in a discipline other than ice skating; as a child, she participated in field hockey. Her introduction to speed skating at the age of eleven marked a pivotal turning point in her career. Regular training on local rinks in her region enabled the early development of her technical skills. During this period, her natural aptitude for sprint distances became evident.
Leerdam’s first major international breakthrough came at the 2017 World Junior Speed Skating Championships held in Helsinki, Finland. She won gold medals in the overall classification and the 1500 metres event. She also achieved top placements in other distances at the same championship, demonstrating a well-rounded performance. At the 2018 World Junior Championships in Salt Lake City, she finished second in the overall classification and reached the podium in the 500 metres, 1000 metres, 1500 metres, and 3000 metres events. This period demonstrated that Leerdam was not only competitive in sprints but also in middle-distance events.
Leerdam moved to the senior category in the 2018–2019 season and quickly assumed key roles within the Dutch speed skating system. During her first senior seasons, she competed in team sprint events and won a gold medal in the team sprint at the 2019 World Single Distance Championships representing the Netherlands. This victory marked her first world championship title at the senior international level. She also established a lasting profile as a competitive athlete in individual events at the same championship.
At the 2020 World Single Distance Championships, Leerdam won the 1000 metres event, securing her first individual world title. She also won gold in the team sprint category that year. In the 2021 and 2022 seasons, she won gold medals in sprint and 1000 metres events at the European Championships, finishing first at the competitions held in Heerenveen and Hamar. At the 2023 World Single Distance Championships, she won another gold medal in the 1000 metres. These results across multiple years at world and European championships demonstrate the consistent progression of her career.
