Karan Johar developed the screenplay after his 2001 film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with the aim of creating a more contemporary narrative, but entrusted the directorial role to his assistant Nikhil Advani. Filming took place between January and October 2003 in Toronto, New York and Mumbai; the process faced a six-month delay due to health issues affecting Shah Rukh Khan.
