Kandiber Castle is located within the borders of Osmancık district in Çorum Province, Türkiye, situated on a natural rocky hill on the northern bank of the Kızılırmak River. The castle has an approximate wall length of 250 meters and a height reaching up to 30 meters. It dominates the town center from an elevated position. Inside the castle, there are remains of a bath carved into the rocks and a two-gate entrance system. Horasan mortar was used in the construction of the fortress walls. Access to the castle is provided via a stone staircase consisting of 272 steps.

Historical Background

The exact construction date of Kandiber Castle is not definitively known. There are various opinions regarding its origin. Some sources suggest that the castle dates back to the Hittite period, while others claim it was built during the Umayyad raids in the Byzantine era. However, the widely accepted view is that the castle was originally constructed during the Roman period and underwent various restorations during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods.

Architecture and Archaeological Remains

Within the castle, there are remnants of bastions, observation posts, entrance gates, and rock tombs. These rock tombs, dating back to the Roman period, are located in the southern section of the castle. At the front of the structure, remains of an inscription tablet can still be seen. Additionally, at the top of the castle, traces of foundations from recently abandoned houses have been identified. According to historical records, the castle once housed nearly 200 homes, while the number of residences outside the fortress walls did not exceed 80.

Observations and Travel Accounts

Ottoman-era traveler Evliya Çelebi noted that the perimeter of Kandiber Castle measured approximately 800 steps and mentioned that the castle featured an iron gate. In the 19th century, Ainsworth, who visited the region, recorded that the town of Osmancık at the time had around 300 houses, 5 small mosques, an inn, and a bathhouse. His illustrations emphasized the prominent height of the castle.

Cultural and Historical Context

Due to its location along the trade route extending from Istanbul to Amasya, Kandiber Castle held both military and commercial significance throughout history. The structure bears traces of various civilizations from the Hittites to the Ottomans. Its rock-cut tombs, water channels, and defensive walls reflect this layered and enduring historical legacy.
