Kapuz Beach

Kapuz Beach is a natural public beach located on the Black Sea coast, approximately 3 kilometers from the center of Zonguldak. Operated by the Zonguldak Municipality, it is the most visited and Blue Flag awarded shoreline in the province. Thanks to its physical and social infrastructure, the beach is heavily utilized during the summer season by both local residents and visitors from outside the region.

Geographical Location and Physical Structure

Kapuz Beach is situated within the boundaries of Yeşil Mahalle, along Kapuz Street, on the western side of Zonguldak city center. The beach spans approximately 180 meters in length and 25 meters in width and is covered with natural sand. Its cove-like structure, characteristic of the Black Sea, provides a relatively sheltered marine environment. The surrounding area is covered by natural landscaping, with walking paths and resting areas lining the shoreline.

Management and Operational Structure

Kapuz Beach is operated as a social facility under the Zonguldak Municipality and is open to public use. Each summer season, the municipality carries out cleaning, maintenance, and improvement works, and implements enhancements based on public feedback. The municipality is responsible for infrastructure upgrades, environmental arrangements, and safety measures to ensure the sustainable operation of the beach.

Blue Flag Status and Environmental Value

Kapuz Beach is the only Blue Flag beach in Zonguldak province. The Blue Flag is an international quality certification awarded to beaches that meet environmental standards. This status is granted based on criteria such as seawater cleanliness, environmental education activities, safety measures, and consistent management practices. The municipality’s eco-friendly approach to the beach has ensured the preservation of this status.

Infrastructure and Service Facilities

Kapuz Beach provides visitors with shower facilities, changing cabins, restrooms, lifeguard stations, snack bars, and sunbed–umbrella services. Additionally, under its social facilities program, the beach features a tea garden and seating areas. Infrastructure improvement projects undertaken by the municipality have introduced parking areas, environmental lighting, and enhanced walking paths. The physical design of the beach accommodates safe use by individuals of all ages, particularly families with children.

Cultural and Social Activities

Kapuz Beach serves not only as a site for swimming and sunbathing but also as a social space for cultural events. Special celebrations are held here annually on occasions such as Maritime and Coastal Navigation Day, observed on July 1. In 2024, festive performances featuring folkloric groups from abroad and official protocol participation took place at the beach. These events contribute directly to the social life of the city.

Comprehensive Renewal and Development Projects

In addition to Kapuz Beach, the Zonguldak Municipality has carried out comprehensive environmental improvement projects in the surrounding areas of Orta Kapuz and Tersane Beaches. These projects have renewed walking paths, seating areas, safety structures, and coastal landscaping. These enhancements, which contribute to the urban aesthetic, have transformed Kapuz and its surroundings into a recreational zone. The municipality defines these areas as “coastal zones where the public can breathe.”
