Karagöl Plateau (Sakarya)

Karagöl Yaylası is located approximately 21 kilometers northeast of the Taraklı district in Sakarya Province, Türkiye, on the extensions of the Samanlı Mountains. Situated at an elevation of about 1,200 meters above sea level, the plateau covers an area of 567 hectares.

Geography and Natural Features

Karagöl Yaylası is covered with pine, beech, fir, oak and hornbeam trees, with specimens in the area reaching ages of 150 to 200 years, heights of 17 meters and trunk circumferences of 4.5 meters. In 2015, these natural riches were officially registered as the “Karagöl Sarıçam Natural Monument.” The plateau features small lakes and meandering streams formed by melting snow. After recent rainfall, these streams fill with water, adding a unique visual richness to the landscape.

Access and Accommodation

Access to the plateau is via Kemaller Village in Taraklı district, with the majority of the route paved and accessible by vehicle. Camping areas for tents and caravans are available for visitors wishing to stay overnight.

Economic and Social Life

Herders from the villages of Mahdumlar, Kemaller, Alballar, Tuzla, Esenyurt, Avdan, Uğurlu, İçdedeler and Dışdedeler bring their cattle and small livestock to graze on the plateau. This transhumance activity contributes significantly to the regional economy through milk and dairy product production.

Nature Tourism and Activities

Karagöl Yaylası serves as an important destination for nature tourism, welcoming visitors during both summer and winter months. Activities such as caravan tourism, camping, motocross and off-road racing are organized on the plateau. Hiking, photography and picnicking are among the most popular activities enjoyed by visitors.

Recent Rainfall and Streams

Following recent heavy rainfall, the natural meandering streams that form part of the plateau’s landscape have filled with water, enhancing the area’s visual appeal. This natural beauty has attracted increased visitor interest and is supported by the Taraklı Municipality.

Cultural Activities and Youth Programs

Under the “Young Atelier” program organized by Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality, young people aged 15 to 21 participate in nature walks and environmental awareness activities on Karagöl Yaylası. These programs aim to foster environmental consciousness and promote healthy lifestyle habits among youth.
