Karaman Hürrem Dayı House

Hürrem Dayı Evi is a historic residence located in the center of Karaman province, possessing a history of approximately 300 years and exhibiting characteristic features of Ottoman civil architecture.

The building is a historic residence that embodies the characteristic features of Ottoman civil architecture and is recognized in literature as one of the surviving examples of traditional Turkish house architecture in Anatolia. Dating to the late Ottoman period, the structure has been officially registered under the category of civil architecture for the preservation of cultural heritage and integrated into cultural tourism.^【1】

The building is situated within the boundaries of Koçakdede Neighborhood in the central district of Karaman province. Located in the Central Anatolia Region, the mansion is easily accessible due to its central position within the city. Access to the area is provided by Karaman’s municipal minibuses and city buses.^【2】

The property originally belonged to Hürrem Dayı, a philanthropist after whom the building is named. The last owner, Hürrem Hanım, donated the property to the Karaman Municipality in 2006. Following the donation, Hürrem Hanım moved to a retirement home, and the building was transferred to public ownership and placed under protection.^【3】

Hürrem Dayı Evi is constructed on a cut-stone foundation with a wooden frame system. Traditional construction techniques were employed, with stone materials dominating the lower levels and wooden framing and infill materials used in the upper levels. The building reflects the domestic culture and aesthetic sensibilities of its era through its architectural details and facade composition.

The interior design of the mansion is distinguished by rich woodwork and kalem-i kari (penwork) decorations. Wooden ceiling carvings, cabinet doors, wall panels, and architectural partitions exemplify the artistic tastes of the period. Kalem-i kari ornamentation on walls and ceilings constitutes essential decorative elements that enhance the building’s artistic value.

The building underwent restoration in 2006 under the initiative of then Karaman Mayor Ali Kantürk. The restoration work was carried out with strict adherence to the building’s original architectural identity, ensuring its authentic renewal. This project was implemented as part of local government initiatives for the preservation of cultural heritage.

Following restoration, Hürrem Dayı Evi was opened to the public as a house-museum with free admission. The building is open for visits seven days a week from 09:00 to 17:00. In accordance with conservation protocols, visitors are not permitted to enter wearing shoes, and consumption of food and beverages inside the building is prohibited. However, photography is permitted within the premises. Digital access and communication regarding the site are managed through the Karaman Municipality.^【4】
