Kartalkaya Ski Resort is located in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey, within the tourism area of the Köroğlu Mountains, approximately 38 kilometers southeast of Bolu city center. Situated at an altitude of 1,850 to 2,200 meters above sea level, the resort is surrounded by forests. The ski resort is suitable for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding between December and April.

Ski Slopes and Mechanical Facilities

Kartalkaya Ski Resort has a total of 25 ski slopes, with a combined length of 40 kilometers. The resort features 18 mechanical facilities with a total carrying capacity of 8,000 people per hour. The slopes are arranged according to different gradients and difficulty levels, making them suitable for disciplines such as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and ski touring.

Snow and Climate Conditions

Kartalkaya has a semi-temperate climate, with an average snow thickness of approximately 250 cm. The prevailing wind direction is from the west-northwest. The ski season extends from December 15 to April 15.

Access to Kartalkaya Ski Resort

Kartalkaya Ski Resort is located 38 kilometers from Bolu city center and 28 kilometers from the Ankara-Istanbul highway. Transportation to the resort is available via hotel shuttles, taxis, and private vehicles from the city center. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes.

Establishment and Development of Kartalkaya

The development of Kartalkaya as a ski resort was initiated by Mazhar Murtezaoğlu. Initially, the project did not attract much interest from the local population; however, over the years, it has become a well-known ski destination across Turkey. The facilities have been in service since 1978.

Hotel Fire in Kartalkaya

On January 21, 2025, a fire broke out at the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya Ski Resort during the night, resulting in the deaths of 76 people and injuries to 51 others. It is believed that the fire started on the fourth floor, where the restaurant is located. Firefighting teams were dispatched from surrounding provinces to respond to the blaze. A judicial investigation has been launched, and an expert committee has been formed. Efforts to determine the cause of the fire are ongoing.
