Kastamonu Urban History Museum

The Kastamonu City History Museum serves as an urban museum reflecting the historical, social, and cultural past of Kastamonu. The museum presents material and visual documents that constitute the city’s memory, organized chronologically and thematically, functioning as a cultural institution that illustrates the different ways of life and cultural evolution of Kastamonu across various periods.

The Kastamonu City History Museum was opened to the public as a result of initiatives led by the Kastamonu Municipality. The museum building has been restored in accordance with original Kastamonu architectural styles and reconfigured to accommodate modern exhibition techniques. Supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the museum stands out for its architecture that harmonizes with the urban fabric of Kastamonu.

The museum’s collections consist of numerous documents, artifacts, and reconstructions that shed light on the social and cultural history of the city. Exhibited items include objects related to Kastamonu’s traditional lifestyle, craft products, and materials pertaining to education, healthcare, and culinary culture. The museum also comprehensively presents examples from Kastamonu’s press history, documents on its political life, traditional clothing, and everyday objects from the period.

A section of the museum displays archaeological and ethnographic materials relating to the approximately two-thousand-year history of Kastamonu’s Taşköprü district. Particularly notable are the findings from the ancient city of Pompeiopolis, dating to the Roman period. The museum also features artifacts that reflect Taşköprü’s traditional production culture. These exhibitions enrich the museum thematically by demonstrating continuity between ancient and recent urban life.

The museum attracts significant attention from both local and international tourists as well as students and researchers in Kastamonu. As of 2022, the Kastamonu City History Museum welcomed approximately 10,000 visitors and contributes to the dissemination of cultural knowledge about the city and the development of urban awareness. Its educational function is particularly supported through school visits, academic tours, and guided excursions.
