History and Architectural Features
The construction of Kilitbahir Castle was started by Fatih Sultan Mehmet between 1462 and 1463. The purpose of the castle was to secure the strait after the conquest of Istanbul and to provide protection against possible naval attacks. The castle was named Kilitbahir, meaning “Lock of the Sea,” due to its strategic importance.
The castle was designed in the shape of a three-leaf clover, making it one of the most advanced defensive structures of its time. The main tower has seven floors and is supported by surrounding walls. Inside the castle, there are rooms for soldiers to stay, ammunition depots, and cisterns. The outer walls are surrounded by moats, creating an additional layer of defense.
Kilitbahir Castle was also actively used during the Gallipoli Campaign. The castle played an important role in defending the strait during World War I and was fortified to prevent the passage of enemy fleets. During the war, additional artillery batteries were installed at the castle, and it was reinforced with modern defense systems.

Restoration Work and Museumization Process
Although Kilitbahir Castle fell into disrepair towards the end of the 20th century, it was restored to its former appearance thanks to restoration work that began in 2011. During the restoration process, the original architectural structure of the castle was preserved, and the stonework and walls were repaired in accordance with the original design.
After the restoration was completed, the castle was opened to the public in 2021 as the “Kilitbahir Castle Museum” under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey. The museum features information panels detailing the castle's history, interactive exhibits, and military artifacts from the Gallipoli Campaigns. Additionally, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Dardanelles Strait from the upper floors of the castle.
