Kırklareli University (KLÜ)

Kırklareli University (KLÜ) is a public university established in Kırklareli, Türkiye on 29 May 2007 by Law No. 5662. The founding decision was published in the Official Gazette No. 26536 on the same date. The university conducts its educational and academic activities across campuses in the city center and districts of Kırklareli. Kırklareli University offers education at undergraduate, associate and postgraduate levels through 12 faculties, 3 institutes, 1 conservatory and 7 vocational schools, and carries out scientific research through 16 Application and Research Centers.

The academic infrastructure of Kırklareli University was based on units previously affiliated with Trakya University in Kırklareli prior to its establishment. At its founding in 2007, the initial academic units transferred to the university included the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, the Institute of Natural Sciences, the Institute of Social Sciences, and seven vocational schools (Technical Sciences, Social Sciences, Health Services, Lüleburgaz, Babaeski, Pınarhisar and Vize).

Over the years following its establishment, the university’s academic structure has expanded in line with regional and national needs. Some of the faculties and institutes established during this expansion include: the Faculty of Technology and the Faculty of Tourism (2009); the Faculty of Engineering (2011); the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Architecture (2012); the Institute of Health Sciences (2013); the Faculty of Law and the Lüleburgaz Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences (2016); the Faculty of Medicine (2018); the Faculty of Applied Sciences (2020); and the Faculty of Health Sciences (2021).

The main campus, Kayalı Campus, is located approximately 8 kilometers from the center of Kırklareli city. The campus houses essential physical facilities including academic buildings, a central library, laboratories, social amenities and sports areas.

Educational activities are also conducted at district campuses outside the city center. The Lüleburgaz Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences, the Faculty of Applied Sciences and the Lüleburgaz Vocational School are located at the Lüleburgaz Campus. The Babaeski Vocational School operates at the Babaeski Campus; the Pınarhisar Vocational School at the Pınarhisar Campus; and the Vize Vocational School at the Vize Campus.

Kırklareli University has a total of 26,643 students enrolled at postgraduate, undergraduate and associate degree levels. According to 2024-2025 academic year data, the number of international students is 2,711.

The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and associate degree programs across fields including health, engineering, social sciences and natural sciences.

At the undergraduate level, programs include Medicine, Law, Architecture, Software Engineering, International Trade and Logistics, Nursing and Psychology.

At the associate degree level, vocational programs include Computer Programming, Logistics, Medical Laboratory Techniques and Mechatronics. Some programs have allocated quotas for students holding citizenship of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Certain undergraduate programs, such as Economics and English Language and Literature, offer instruction in English.

In line with its internationalization goals, the university supports student and staff mobility. Exchange programs coordinated by the Office of International Relations include Erasmus+, which provides study and internship opportunities with institutions in European Union member countries; the university has over 90 agreements with institutions in 26 countries. The Mevlana Exchange Program facilitates exchanges with higher education institutions worldwide without geographical restrictions. The Farabi Exchange Program offers students the opportunity to study at another higher education institution within Türkiye. Additionally, bilateral agreements with institutions in other countries provide further exchange opportunities.

YÖK Accessible University Awards (2020): As a result of the “2020 Accessible University Awards” organized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the Rectorate Building received the Orange Flag award in the “Accessibility in Space” category.^【1】

TÜBİTAK Student Project Achievements: Students have achieved success in projects organized by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK):

• 2242-TÜBİTAK University Student Research Project Competition (2020): Students from the Department of Food Engineering were first in the “Food and Agriculture” category at the Istanbul regional level. A student from the Technical Sciences Vocational School was first in the “Information and Communication Technologies” category at the Istanbul regional level.^【2】

Scientific and Innovation Projects: The university supports scientific research through the Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Coordination Office. In 2016, the university participated in the 1st R&D, Innovation Summit and Exhibition organized by the Group of Architects and Engineers (MMG), presenting five R&D and innovation projects including “New Metal-Organic Frameworks” and “Production of Hardaliye, a Fermented Beverage from Kırklareli Grapes.”^【3】

Individual Academic Achievement: Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Demet Topal Koç, received the Doctoral Thesis Award from Yıldız Technical University in 2023.^【4】

The central library located at Kayalı Campus meets students’ research and study needs. Laboratories provide practical training opportunities in fields such as engineering, natural sciences and health sciences. Social facilities include a dining hall, cafeterias and student club offices. Sports activities are supported by an indoor sports hall, football fields and other outdoor sports facilities. Accommodation services are provided by dormitories affiliated with the Credit and Hostels Institution (KYK) located near the campus.
