Kırlangıç Valley Underground City

The Kırlangıç Valley Underground City is located within the boundaries of Kayseri Province, in the Kırlangıç Valley, which extends from Hisarcık to Mount Erciyes and features canyon-like sections in places. The underground structure is situated approximately one kilometer north of the Hisarcık district, along the main road, on a steep slope facing the valley.

The history of the underground city extends back approximately 8,000 years, to around 6000 BCE. In this regard, the structure has the potential to be one of the earliest settlement sites in the region. Today, however, the site has not yet been developed for tourism.

The structure is 505 meters in length and reaches a depth of 56 meters below ground. The five-level underground settlement was carved directly into a vertical rock face across all five levels. All floors are notable for their facades facing the valley.

The first three levels consist of large halls and living areas within these halls. The fourth level contains smaller rooms accessible via steep staircases. The fifth and lowest level is a sealed tunnel, which is believed to connect to an exit opening carved into the rock at the valley floor and reaching the level of the stream.

The architectural features of the structure suggest that it was used primarily as a permanent residential settlement rather than a defensive underground city. No defensive doors have been found on any level, and each level features windows opening toward the valley. The entrance is located at the end of a steep slope and opens into a large hall. Beneath this hall lies another well-carved room with six evenly spaced chambers. These characteristics indicate that the structure served a function distinct from typical rock dwellings.
